Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way-- a name that has haunted every early 2000s, fandom Tumblr user, and has since been passed down to the next generation. This single fanfiction was a cultural reset for the entirety of the Harry Potter fandom. My Immortal, named after the Evanescence song, was a fanfiction written by Tara Gilesbie in 2006 and 2007 and published on Fanfiction.net. It was an alternative universe, or “AU”, Harry Potter fanfiction that followed the vampire-witch main character Ebony and her emo shenanigans.
First and foremost, the spelling and format was trash. As part of popular early 2000s culture, Gailesbie uses slang such as “fangz”, “da”, “wif”, “u rok”, and “4”. The grammar and spelling errors seem to get more intense as the story continues, going from a cringey fanfiction to slowly dissolving into madness. By the last chapter, it is almost completely illegible. One passage reads, “I sat between Darkness and Draco and opposite B’loody Mary. Crab and Goyle started 2 make some morbid jokes. They both looked exactly like Villie Vollo. I eight some Count Chocula and drank som blood from a cup. Then I herd someone shouting angrily!” It is a struggle to find a sentence that is not littered with curse words, and impossible to find one that contains no spelling or grammatical errors. Luckily, the chapters tend to be very short and dialogue-heavy four sentences, which means the forty-four chapters breeze by in no time! There is even a point of view switch, with no warning, to Draco for about four-sentences before going back to Ebony’s P.O.V, also with no warning. In addition to writing that would make an English teacher cry, Gliesbie seems to have little knowledge of the Harry Potter universe nor any attachment to the characters. She threw away the world-building, plot, and characters of the original text. Most of the characters had name changes and gothic makeovers, and their personalities became completely unrecognizable. All of the spells often used in the series were thrown out and wands were just used as magical firearms. The author admitted in one of her many author’s notes to not having read any of the books and only watching the movies, presumably because she thought Draco was attractive.
My Immortal blew up in popularity for the same reason any media trend does– luck. It just happened to be published at the right time, in the right fandom, and had just the right amount of cringe to attract hate readers from around the globe. Like most self-insert fanfiction, it does not really have a coherent plot, but it sure is entertaining. To fully understand this masterpiece without reading through it, it is vital to be aware of a summary.
There is relationship drama between Draco, Ebony, and Vampire, emo Harry Potter, in the form of a love triangle. Draco and Ebony like each other, but Ebony also kind of likes Vampire, who reciprocates her feelings, but then there is even more tension when Ebony discovers Draco is bisexual and Vampire is actually his ex-boyfriend. To symbolize his love for Vampire, Draco has even gotten a tattoo of Vampire’s name on his arm. After Ebony is crushed by the revelation that Vampire and Draco are exes, Voldemort corners her in the Forbidden Forest and tells her that she must kill Vampire or he will kill Draco. Ebony ends up not killing Vampire, which leads to Draco being dead, but he does not actually die. He is just kidnapped. Vampire and Ebony go save Draco, who is being tortured by Snaketail, who is probably supposed to be Wormtail, and Ebony has a breakdown about how she is too perfect and it is a curse that everyone she talks to falls in love with her. An excerpt from her rant states, “‘Its so unfair!' I yielded. 'Why can’t I just be ugly or plain like all da other girls and preps here except for B’loody Mary, because shes not ugly or anything!”’ After that, Draco and Ebony go to watch a My Chemical Romance concert but, when the band takes their masks off, they reveal themselves to be Voldemort and the Death Dealers. Luckily, before Voldemort can kill Draco, a new and improved emo Dumbledore swoops in and saves them. The concert ends up being moved, since the dark lord takes it over and Ebony goes with Vampire since she and Draco are fighting. She ends up kissing Vampire at the concert, but then she sees Draco crying and watching them. Luckily, he quickly forgives her.
Trouble starts brewing when Cornelia Fudge and Rumbridge try to fire Dumbledore and close the school but, before they can, Dumbledore reveals that the only person who can defeat Voldemort is at Hogwarts– Ebony! Ebony must go back in time to seduce Voldemort, or just kill him if that does not work, to stop him from attacking present-day Hogwarts. Tom Riddle (whom everyone calls by his middle name, Satan) ends up falling for Ebony and everything gets very convoluted with all of the jumping back and forth between time. At one point, “Morty Mcfli” shows up and gives her a time-traveling device. This is also the point within the story where Gilesbie is hacked and there are some fake added chapters before she gets her account back. Ebony ends up jumping in front of Lucian from the past because James got upset at him and tried to shoot him. She also found Draco cheating on her. There is a bunch of nonsense that leads Ebony to bring Satan back to her original time. Satan reveals that he knew what Ebony was trying to do the whole time and Animorphs into his noseless Voldemort form. There is a fight scene, ending with Ebony screaming, "Abra kadabra!" and that was the last chapter ever posted to My Immortal. In 2008, administrators of FanFiction.net noticed how many violations the fanfiction contained and took it down, but not before it had been republished and copied many, many times.
"'Konnichiwa everybody come in.” said Professor Sinister in Japanese."
One of the best recurring characters is Dumbledore’s headache. Apparently, a lot of the avid readers were complaining that Dumbledore was swearing and acting extremely out of character. Shocking. So Gailesbie’s excuse was that Dumbledore had a headache that made him cranky. While Ebony and Draco are having a conversation, Dumbledore interrupts them: “Then suddenly Dumbledore walked in angrily! His eyes were all fiery and I knew this time it wasn’t cause he had a headache.” The main character, Ebony, was very clearly meant to be a self-insert of the author. There were multiple instances where she writes Tara instead of Ebony, and this could insinuate that either she was so locked into the mindset that Ebony was basically her that she accidentally wrote her own name, or that she wrote all of the chapters out with her name and went back and edited them to be Ebony and she just happened to miss a few edits. The first option seems much more likely, considering that Gilesbie did not show signs that she would be someone ashamed enough to edit out her name before publishing her work publicly. Though the ideology surrounding Mary Sues is a topic for another day, Ebony was often taunted in the comments for being one, since everyone she met instantly fell in love with her and she was perfect at everything in that cool 2000s gothic type of way. Meanwhile, everyone else was a cardboard cut-out with the same personality. Most of the guys were described as looking like Gerard Way and being sensitive and bi. The other girls were always described as kawaii and just served the purpose of being Ebony’s friends. Other notable characters were Dumbledore and his headache, Sirius, Snape, Voldemort/Satan, Willow the self-insert for her friend Raven and Briteny the prep.
Usually, book reviews contain thoughtful statements about the tone and pacing of the story, but My Immortal was not thoughtfully written, so why waste the digital paper to talk about it? Instead, this will be the list of trigger warnings contained in this fanfiction: suicide, self-harm, homophobia, racism, pedophilia, rape, addiction, and sex. That being said, here is the link to one of the many copy-pastes of the original work. My Immortal was written in the depressed equals cool era of early Shane Dawson videos and Creepypastas. Although that does not make the list of offensive trigger warnings acceptable, it is an explanation as to why it is written… the way it was. The fact that this was considered at least semi-normal in the fanfiction space gives credit to the big debate surrounding My Immortal. Was it a sincere pre-teen girl wanting to write about Harry Potter or a meme-lord troll that wanted to make fun of genuine writers of Gilesbie’s style?
The true appeal of My Immortal is the fact that it is a story within a story within a story. Every chapter included an author's note written by Gilesbie, which unveiled some interesting facts about the writer and allowed the reader to get a glimpse into her mind. From her notes, it can be gathered that she had her friend Raven, AKA bloodytearz666, as her editor and perhaps co-writer. Raven had actually written an extremely similar fanfiction on her bloodytearz666 account that predated My Immortal. This less popular fanfiction, I’m Not Okay, which was named after the My Chemical Romance song, was published on Feb. 16, 2006, two weeks before My Immortal. It is trippy to read because it feels like an alternative universe where the spelling is just a little bit better and everything is, overall, less offensive to the eyes. The intro says, “Fifteen-year-old Eternity Demen’tia Johnston warily took a seat on the Hogwarts Express. As she did so, she heard many giggles in the air. Ugh. Stupid preps.” The first name starts with an E, her middle name ia Demen’tia, the mention of preps, all of it falls in line with the beloved My Immortal. Yet, this cursed alternative universe is nowhere near as well-known. Similarly to the character Willow, there is a character named Elvira who is explicitly told to be Gilesbie.
The two girls' relationship seemed to have started off well as they had worked on writing together. However, they presumably got into a fight and they started yelling at each other through their authors' notes. Raven wrote, “TARA IS DA BIGGEST F*****G B**** EVER AND BY THE WAY I’M A BIGGER MCR FAN AND GERARD IS MINE 4EVER SO F*** U! AND I’M NOT GIVING U UR SWEATER BACK!” This was followed by Raven sending Tara’s character back to the first year and sorting her into the preppy Gryffindor house. It is also around this time that Tara’s writing sees a dip in quality, insinuating that Raven quit being her editor. The number of similarities raised suspicions on whether or not Raven and Tara were actually the same person. In this theory, the troll would have started out with Raven’s account and posted I’m Not Okay. However, the story did not blow up as much as they wished, so they created a second account to further exaggerate the “cringe”, hoping to gain traction from their second account. The author made their characters (Tara and Raven) friends, hoping to draw some attention back to their original account. This would explain the similar plots and characters, as well as why the spelling and grammar in My Immortal is so bad, despite Raven, who was shown to be decent in this area, being the editor. Or, of course, this could just be a genuine fight between friends. More evidence that points to the fakeness of the author is how unhinged the story became towards the end. It began to include some things that were so outlandish that the excuse of it being an edgy tween girl seemed no longer relevant. For example, one of the lines towards the end of the fanfiction says, “I ran sexily down the staris in2 da Grate Hall while da portraits looked around at me scaredly. There was hardly ne1 else in the stairs nd tere was an atmosphere of horror.” Strangely, the writer seemed to have no problem spelling "atmosphere" or even using ‘an’ instead of ‘a’. At one point, she even correctly spelled Alzheimer's, a word that even certain high school sophomores have to look up to spell.
There is one more layer that needs unraveling when it comes to the lore of My Immortal. Whether Tara and Raven were two trolls, or one troll, or two real girls– who is Tara? Although Tara’s full name is online, which is quite possibly an alias or only half true, the person behind the account has never revealed themself to be the author of My Immortal. Surprisingly, many people have come forward, claiming to be Tara, Raven, or a mysterious third friend who had access to the account. Most of these people have not been able to come forward with enough information to confirm that they are who they say they are, and some have been caught red-handed, lying about their association with the account in an attempt to get a book deal and generate interest. To be honest, if the real author came forward with undeniable proof that they wrote My Immortal and they were trying to get their book published there would be so many people pre-ordering the book without even a glance at the genre.
The first thing that comes up when Googling the author of the fanfiction is a woman by the name of Rose Christo. Christo had originally made a post after finding the login password of her FictionPress account updating her fans about how “Tara” was doing. Up until then, it was a popular theory that the author of Handbook for Mortals, Lani Sarem, was the author of My Immortal. Handbook for Mortals is a notoriously bad book where the author pre-ordered so many of her own books that she scammed her way to the top of The New York Times List. The writing shares many similarities with My Immortal, which is why so many people had fun believing Tara grew up to continue writing horrible literature. However, that theory was quickly shut down. According to Aja Romano, a culture writer for Vox, “At the same time, an editorial assistant at Macmillan Publishers, attempting to interject amid the speculation over Handbook for Mortals, blurted out the news no one was expecting, in a pair of since-deleted tweets: that Sarem couldn’t be the author of My Immortal because the real author of My Immortal was publishing a memoir with Macmillan.” This true author of My Immortal was revealed to be Christo, as fans hungrily hunted down her Tumblr and proof of her identity. Christo had all of the unedited chapters of the fanfiction saved on a hard drive as well as all of the passwords to the accounts so it seemed like the case was closed as everyone eagerly awaited her memoir detailing what led her to the iconic story. She had given a few details as to why she wrote My Immortal, like how she claimed to have purposely written an outrageous fanfiction to catch the attention of her brother, whom she was separated from in the foster care system.
That is, until Christo confessed to using editing software to forge identification certificates. Christo’s alleged brother came forward on Kiwifarms, a website used to bully online figures, and claimed that her real name was Theresa Christodoulopoulos and most parts of her identity were fake. Christo had claimed to be a Cree Native American who grew up in the foster care system after being severely abused, but her brother said that none of this was true. Her brother, who is referred to as a Youtuber by the name of Sallow Dawn across many sources, but whose video is unable to be found, claimed that Christo and their whole family was white, and, though they were separated as children, neither of them were ever in the foster care system. Dawn’s identity was confirmed across Kiwi Farms and Tumblr platforms as well as the missing Youtube video. Soon after this, the memoir was canceled, and the likelihood that her unedited chapters of the fanfiction were just slightly altered versions of the original skyrocketed.
There are many more instances of people confessing that they are the author of My Immortal, such as TheBatMan’s confession. He has a whole different crazy story that is simply too much to get into, but it involves him owning multiple different accounts and cosplaying as different people who all start drama with each other. There is also Raven the Acid Bath Princess of the Darkness and Tara on Youtube, also known as xXblo0dyxkissxX, who garnered a popular theory among fans because of their same names and general demeanor. Unfortunately, this was proven false when, years later, the grown-up Raven came back to confirm they were trolling and did not even know about My Immortal at the time they came up with their names. However, this does prove that this same style of goth content was very popular even outside of My Immortal. After all of the conspiracies, book deals, and confessions, the world is still no closer to finding the author of the world's worst fanfiction.
‘“Hi Vampire.” I said flirtily as I started to sob.”
It is fair to say that the whole story of My Immortal is dark, and not just referring to the character’s goth style but in offensive language and false authors claiming to be people that they are not. Most of the drama is just outlandish craziness, but there is a certain aspect of underlying malice. Tara, seeing how many people were making fun of her creation, started threatening her fans. In the author's notes, she starts saying that she will not publish the next chapter until she gets a certain number of good reviews. This is actually kind of funny, but it's not hard to imagine that, if this was really a teen girl, it would have been hard to get all of this extreme negative attention. This could have played a major factor in the author not wanting to come forward after all of these years of torment, especially if she has grown and matured since then as most people have. The cruelty of the internet could have truly affected her mental health. On an even more controversial note– money. Since My Immortal was just a fanfiction with no copyright claims, people have been making money off of the fanfiction’s success. There is currently a paperback version of My Immortal available to buy on Amazon for $9.99. On Prime, too! This money is clearly not going to the author but instead to some big company that wanted to profit off of the success of an internet phenomenon, and– oh, look, it is shipped and sold by Amazon themselves. Clearly, the ethics of this gets murky, but the bottom line is that some big company is once again taking advantage of the lack of copyright claims on a creator's content and using it for profit.
It is no wonder why My Immortal became as popular as it did. The horrible writing is absolutely hilarious and the fact it may have been written with serious intent only makes it better. Being able to theorize about the author, as well as Raven, was fun for all of the fans and just made the reading experience even more interactive. Everyone who has read the fanfiction has their own theories about whether it was written sincerely or not, where the author may be now, and why exactly they are still in hiding. My Immortal was a cultural reset and one can only hope it continues its reign of terror on pop culture. C u laterr prepz.
