This Month: Lisa Marie Presley
By Kaylee Brazzle
The famous Elvis Presley had a daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. She was born in Memphis Tennessee on February 1st, 1968, exactly 9 months after Elvis and his wife Priscilla’s wedding. Her parents had divorced when she was only 4 years old in 1973. Her life has always been a roller coaster of emotions, especially when her famous dad passed. Lisa died on January 12th, 2023, but her family’s legacy still lives on.
When Elvis Presley, Lisa’s father, died in 1977, she became the sole heir of his home in Graceland, along with her grandfather, Vernon Presley, and her great grandmother, Minnie May Hood Presley, until they had also passed. According to an article talking about Lisa’s life and death written by People magazine journalists Jack Irvin and Liz McNeil, “Following their respective deaths in 1979 and 1980, she became the sole heir and also inherited her father's Graceland residence.” She had inherited her father’s estate on her 25th birthday in 1995.
In many interviews with Lisa about Elvis, she had always talked positively about him and how much of a fun and incredible dad he was to her. Elvis would just sing to her and make her feel better as a child. According to People, Lisa Marie said, “He'd always wake me up to sing in the middle of the night, get on the table and sing." Lisa Marie recalled of her time with Elvis on Good Morning America in 2009, "I remember him as my dad, but he was a very exciting dad." It is just astounding to see such a good relationship between father and daughter, especially when the father is the King of Rock.
To not much of a surprise, Lisa was also a dedicated philanthropist, seeing that the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation was still taking care of homeless families and offering rent-free housing. She was indoctrinated into Scientology (a religious belief), by her mother Priscilla. However, according to an article on Smooth Radio, “ she officially defected from the church in 2016. Both her mother and daughter, Riley Keough, remain members of the Church.” Lisa loved her family, her church, and even people she didn’t even know.
To much dismay, Lisa Marie Presley died on Jan. 13, 2023 of cardiac arrest. As her mom stated to Smooth Radio, “She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known, we ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss.” Lisa will always be remembered for her spectacular life and fascinating family. The public should give the family room and space to breathe in this dreadful time.
