Often, there are events that happen in towns that go unnoticed by many citizens. Perhaps, that is simply because it is usually just boring facts that no one cares about. Sometimes, though, it is worth hearing about, not necessarily for educational purposes but just to laugh at and see how people in our world act. Here are some updates from the past few days in Grants Pass, Oregon.
On Jan. 7, 2023, on the Grants Pass Parkway, police responded to a disturbance call. Jon Robert Osborn and "James Jones" got into a squabble at Baker Park campsite, where Jones tried to leave on foot and Osborn followed him, leading to a fight on the highway. Authorities say that Osborn struck Jones 15-20 times with his Bluetooth speaker. Jones was transported to Three Rivers Medical for treatment, but there have been no updates on his condition. Osborn was placed in custody for Second Degree Assault, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Disorderly Conduct. He is to be held without bail on Monday. Why he chose a Bluetooth speaker is yet to be determined, but perhaps it was simply because it is hard and close but it seems a bit extra.

Zachariah Patrick Peugh and Stacy Schwarz were apprehended for working together to steal hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise from Walmart and for an outstanding warrant. They skip-scanned items adding up to $373; when questioned, they passed all points of intention to deprive the business of property. Stacy went willingly into the office and will therefore get Second Degree Theft and will then be released. However, Zachariah fled on foot, landing him being caught on the Parkway, resulting in Second Degree Theft charges, Escape attempts, and Failing to Appear in court for Attempted Possession of a Prohibited Firearm. That would explain the three cop cars parked alongside the side wall last week. It is yet to be determined how they thought they could get away with not scanning over $300 worth of products without getting caught but to each their own.

As a result of large system upgrades to the City's financial system, the Grants Pass Billing Customer Service Department was closed from Jan. 12 to Jan. 17. This upgrade affects the availability to pay bills across departments, including tickets and online payments. They also were unable to process requests via phone, email and walk-ins. If you needed services, it was recommended to get them before the shutdown. Perhaps, we could have prevented this shutdown had there been more planning but, luckily, it is only lasted for a few days.

On Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, the Medford Mail Tribune ceased to produce news. As one of the main newspapers in Southern Oregon, it is a huge shock to most writers and readers. Due to industry-wide reductions, it is no longer sustainable for the Mail Tribune to keep open and hiring workers. In Grants Pass, we now only have our local Daily Courier for our news.
