Spring comes with relief for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder. SAD is a very real and serious type of depression. According to Phsychiatry.org, "About 5% of adults in the U.S experience SAD and it typically lasts about 40% of the year" and the disorder is not easy to deal with. The Mayo Clinic’s definition of SAD is, “ SAD begins and ends about the same time every year. If you are like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue sapping your energy and making you feel moody. These symptoms resolve during the spring and summer months.” As it turns warmer around the world, SAD slowly dwindles away. In some cases, people experience symptoms year-round but, for most people, it goes away in the springtime. SAD is hard for a lot of people because they may feel like they are so happy and want to hold on to that happy feeling but, as soon as it gets cloudy and rainy and cold, they just cannot control it. Some people who have SAD try to live in a place that is relatively warm all year round, such as Arizona or Florida. If that is not possible, light therapy works for some. Others just have to struggle through it and hopefully have a support system behind them to help.
Spring brings so many fun events. This year, Easter, which is some children's favorite holiday besides Christmas, is on Apr. 20. The Easter Bunny and the colorful egg hunts and candy and baskets bring so much joy. Activities like decorating eggs and the Easter Bunny hiding them for children to find in the morning are fun moments for many children. Another pastime in the spring is to go to flower fields and explore the different types of flowers to see what our beautiful world can make. Shelby Deering from The Pioneer Women says, “ Some activities were made for sunny days, like bird-watching, starting a garden, hiking, biking, and planting flowers… Spring is the perfect time to shake things up and clear out the stagnant energy left over from the winter.” The activities in the spring are enjoyable and they keep people outside in the sunny weather. A bonus is that most activities can be done with other people, maybe even in a community club. The activities in spring can make SAD dwindle and help people to feel happier in life.
