Music

In this class, you’ll learn the basics of guitar playing — from simple chords to strumming your favorite songs. You’ll explore how music connects to rock and pop culture throughout history. By the end, you’ll be able to play real songs and understand how guitar shapes the music you love.  

In this class, you’ll perform traditional and modern mariachi music as part of a high-level ensemble. You’ll learn advanced techniques, harmonies, and performance skills that bring this vibrant style to life. Students will collaborate closely as a group to share Mexican culture through school and community performances.

Concert Band is a non-auditioned ensemble open to all wind, brass, and percussion players. Previous experience in middle school band is highly recommended but not required. Students will learn new music, develop their playing skills, and perform in concerts throughout the year.  

Symphonic Band is an auditioned ensemble for advanced wind, brass, and percussion players who are ready for a challenge. Students perform at concerts, festivals, community events, and state-level competitions. High expectations and strong commitment are required to help the group achieve excellence.  Audition Required 

This is a non-auditioned class open to all students who want to play violin, viola, cello, or bass. Previous experience in middle school orchestra is highly recommended but not required. Students will build their skills, learn new music, and perform in concerts throughout the year.

Marching Band is an after-school performance ensemble open to dedicated wind, brass, percussion, and color guard students. The group performs at all home football games, pep events, parades, and community performances. Students should be ready for physical activity, teamwork, and a fun, high-energy performance experience.

Concert Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble for advanced string players who are ready for a challenge. Students in this class perform at concerts, festivals, community events, and the State Festival. High expectations and strong commitment are required to help the group perform at its very best.  Audition Required

Mixed Choir is a fully mixed, non-auditioned choir. Members of this choir will learn the basic foundations of music and get to know their voices as they work on pieces of music that will gradually increase in difficulty throughout the year. This course is designed for those hoping to prepare to successfully audition for Concert Choir and/or Madrigals, and for those wishing to get their feet wet in the world of choral music. Students are encouraged to sign up for a full year, but have the option to choose the 1st or 2nd semester if a scheduling conflict is present.

Tenor/Bass Choir is a non-auditioned choir open to students singing in the tenor and bass voice ranges. Members of this choir will learn the foundational skills of choral music while developing healthy vocal technique specific to changing and lower voices. Students will build confidence, musicianship, and ensemble skills as they work on music that gradually increases in difficulty throughout the year. This course is designed for students interested in strengthening their vocal skills, preparing for advanced choirs such as Concert Choir and/or Madrigals, or exploring choral music in a supportive environment. All grades are welcome. This is a full-year course. 

Soprano/Alto Choir is a non-auditioned choir open to students singing in the soprano and alto voice ranges. Members of this choir will develop the basic foundations of music while learning healthy vocal technique and ensemble skills appropriate for higher voices. Students will work on a variety of choral literature that increases in complexity throughout the year, helping them grow musically and vocally. This course is designed for students who wish to build confidence, prepare for advanced choirs such as Concert Choir and/or Madrigals, or gain experience in choral singing. All grades are welcome. This is a full-year course. 

Concert Choir is a large, mixed, fully auditioned choir. Members of this group are expected to meet higher vocal and musical standards than those of the three non-auditioned groups. This course demands more of the students to work hard and take ownership of their ensemble. The music selected will challenge students to continuously reflect upon and refine their vocal technique and overall musicianship. Audition required: Mr. Broschinsky

Madrigals is Granger’s most prestigious choir. The rigors and demands of this choir are much higher as it strives for musical excellence day in and day out. The group also participates in quite a bit of community outreach through performance, which includes several extra performances in the month of December. This course teaches all styles of singing as students experience many cultures and periods of history through their music. Additional fees may apply, including suit or dress costs. Audition required

The study of harmony in this course includes chord structure, tonal music, harmonization techniques, melody writing, modulation, altered chords, secondary dominants, and seventh chords. The content of the course also includes the use of repetition, imitation, and sequence in melody writing and provides practice in transposing from one key or clef to another. The course prepares students to write and arrange music to pass the AP Music Theory exam.
