Theme from The Muppet Show
arr. Frank Cofield
The Muppet Show Theme (written by Jim Henson and Sam Pottle in 1976) is the show's theme song. It is the opening and closing theme for every episode of The Muppet Show and was performed by The Muppets in a scene of The Muppets.
At the end of the song, Gonzo the Great appeared onstage to play the final note, with various comical results. For the first series, he struck the O in the show's logo as a gong; in all other series, he appeared within the O to play a trumpet. Each episode ended with an extended instrumental performance of The Muppet Show Theme by the Muppet orchestra before Statler and Waldorf gave the last laugh of the night.
Every series, the TV version of the song was presented with re-worked lyrics. While the opening sequence evolved visually over the course of the show's five series, the musical composition remained essentially the same. Throughout the years, the song has become a staple of the franchise.
Terracotta Warriors
Scott Watson(b. 1962)
Terracotta Warriors was inspired by the extraordinary "spirit army" of clay statues -- numbering more than 6,000 -- created in the third century B.C. for the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, first emperor of China. This astounding array of armed sculptures was placed in the emperor's tomb, along with hundreds of terracotta horses and chariots, to protect the emperor in the afterlife.
The music begins with a brief, plaintive folk chant summoning the army from their centuries-old sleep. The faithful warriors respond, coming to life to protect their emperor with musical representations of uniform marching and weapons display. Terracotta Warriors captures the legend and grandeur of the Qin dynasty in this striking and unique piece for band.
Terracotta Warriors was commissioned by the Albemarle County (Virginia) Middle School Honors Band and was premiered at their November 2016 festival.
The Great Locomotive Chase
Robert W. Smith(1958-2023)
Inspired by the events surrounding the railway between Atlanta and Chattanooga during the early years of the Civil War, Robert W. Smith stages the train chase complete with fascinating textures and effects. Listeners become engulfed in the vivid sounds. You can almost smell the smoke. All aboard!
Imaginarium
Randall Standridge(b. 1976)
Inside every person, there is a place where creativity dwells. Gears turn, dreams flow, and ideas spark into life. Imaginarium is the place that every creative person goes to, again and again, to find their muse, flesh out ideas, and to exert change on the world around them.
Commissioned for the 2015 Association of Texas Small School All-State Band, Imaginarium is comprised of four sections: Sparks where ideas begin to germinate; “The Cloud Factory” which represents the day-dreamy zone where one imagines endless possibilities: Here, There be Monsters... is that moment of panic or nightmare that all creative people feel when self-doubt sets in and the task seems too monumental to overcome; a brief recapitulation to Sparks before Eureka!, the idea is fully realized!
This piece is dedicated to all of the dreamers who see more in the world than is actually there, who see possibilities where others see only dead ends, and who believe in creation rather than destruction.
Selections from Grease
arr. Ted Ricketts
Grease is a 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey with additional songs written by John Farrar. Named after the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as greasers, the musical is set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School and follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, politics, personal core values, and love. The score attempts to recreate the sounds of early rock and roll.
Grease was first performed in 1971 in the original Kingston Mines nightclub in Chicago. From there, it has been successful on both stage and screen, but the content has been diluted and its teenage characters have become less Chicago habitués and more generic. At the time that it closed in 1980, Grease's 3,388-performance run was the longest yet in Broadway history. It went on to become a West End hit, a successful feature film, two popular Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007, and a staple of regional theatre, summer stock, community theatre, and high school and middle school drama groups.
Loch Lomond
Sam Baltzer
At the time in Scottish history when Loch Lomond was a new song, the United Kingdom (which united Scotland, England, and Wales) had already been formed. But the Highland Scots wanted a Scottish, not an English, king to rule. Led by their Bonnie Prince Charlie (Prince Charles Edward Stuart) they attempted unsuccessfully to depose Britain's King George II. An army of 7,000 Highlanders were defeated on April 16, 1746, at the famous Battle of Culloden Moor.
