Yes!
All members of Concert Band and Wind Ensemble are a part of Marching Band and Pep Band. If there is a consistent conflict with a non-GHS activity talk to Mr. Brown.
Yes, yes, yes! There is no reason that athletics should be an obstacle for joining band. Almost half of the current band program(50 students) are student-athletes including a few who are in football and basketball(our pep band games). When in doubt, talk with Mr. Brown and we'll figure out a plan that works for you.
Yes! The bands and choirs meet at the same time so you can be in both choir and band.
Yes! Even if it's been a couple years we would love to have you join. Learning a new instrument is always an option.
Absolutely none. Mr. Brown is happy to help any student interested in band learn an instrument and is always around to help if you need it.
No you do not have to however my supply is limited and first come first serve. Mr. Brown has yet to run out of instruments for everyone's primary instrument. If you do wish to rent the best is White House of Music, but Brass Bell in Glendale is also good for instrument rentals.
No, Mr. Brown has taught many students multiple instruments, whether for fun or for an ensemble. The most common ensembles that have students on secondary instruments are the Jazz ensembles.
Yes and no. Yes, you have to play something of that type of music. It doesn't matter if its a solo or larger ensemble, you just need to play something. That being said, you are not required to play that at the festival.
There are 2 main differences from 8th grade to high school:
In high school we have many outside of school events. These include: evening rehearsals, pep band, marching field show, parades, and other performance opportunities.
In high school the expectations are higher. There is more music between pep band, marching, and concert music, all of which has appropriately increased in difficulty from 8th grade. Do not fear, you are not alone. We all work as a team to learn the music so the band can succeed.
It really varies. We play at around 4-5 football games from the end of august to mid-October and around 10 or so basketball games from mid-November to mid-February. In September there are also a few evening marching rehearsals where we rehearse for the field show.
