Seminar is a ¼ credit pass/fail course per semester. In order to pass, students need an 80% or higher in the course. Seminar is all about student growth and achievement. Student progress is tracked in three areas: Weekly Grade Check/Goal Setting, Monthly Reflection, EDP (Naviance) completion, and Final Semester Reflection.
A major element to student growth and achievement is reflecting on where one has been and where one currently stands. At the end of each month, students will write a reflection on their growth as a student over the previous four weeks.
The Progress Check + Reflection Form is what gets graded in Seminar--meaning there is one grade per month in Seminar. The Monthly Progress Check and Reflection is based on the weekly grade check and goal setting and will be graded on an 10, 8, 6, 0 Scale.
The grade is based on completing grade check and for completing the previous weekly progress logs (indicating weekly choices, setting a goal/plan, and discussing why they set the goal and what they hope to achieve).
Teachers have the option to check that students are progressing on Seminar choices, including EDP (Naviance), Khan Academy, The Forum, Reader’s World, or MiProject.
Each week students will begin Seminar with a grade check using PowerSchool. Please see these instructions to sign in to PowerSchool. Students will document their academic standing on their Progress Check Form.
An important component of student growth and achievement is planning and goal setting. After grade check, students will choose, from the Seminar Menu, how they will use each WAVE of Seminar. Students will then set goals for themselves for each WAVE of Seminar, as well as an explanation of why or what they hope to gain.
A final element to student growth is preparing for life after high school. This is done by completing the EDP (Educational Development Plan). The EDP is a graduation requirement and helps students plan and process options for post high school learning/career interests. Students will complete 4 activities and have 3 dedicated opportunities during the semester to complete the EDP activities.
Please see the Syllabus for more details about grading. Students will complete four Naviance activities prior to the end of each semester to complete their Educational Development Plan. Students will keep track of their weekly progress and overall progress will be checked by the Seminar teacher and a grade posted in PowerSchool.
A required final reflection essay serves as the final exam for Seminar and is worth 10 points. The essay will be graded on a 10, 8, 6, 0 scale.
