Class rank is determined at the end of each semester using the student’s cumulative grade point average. Advanced Placement (AP) courses have an honor point multiplier of 1.25 for G.P.A. purposes. (See Transfer Students for eligibility if applicable).
Report cards are issued at the end of each semester. Only the semester grades are recorded on the student’s permanent transcript record. Credit is earned on a semester basis for successfully completing a semester course or a semester of a year course. Credit is awarded in January and June. Cumulative Grade Point Average is determined at the end of each semester using the student’s final semester letter grades for all classes. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by dividing the total honor points earned by the total number of credits attempted. The Honor Point Values for letter grades are listed below. Grades in Advanced Placement (AP) courses are weighted by a multiplier of 1.25.

Grades not used in calculating the grade point average:
P = Pass with credit, no grade
WP = Withdrew (from school) Passing
WF = Withdrew (from school) Failing
E = Earned credit with 0.000 GPA
An Incomplete grade (I) may be given where serious circumstances prevent the student from completing all work by the end of the marking period. This is a temporary grade. It is the student’s responsibility to resolve this within two weeks of the end of the marking period or the grade becomes an F.
Grade Changes: A grade may only be changed by the issuing teacher.
Repeating a Class: If a student repeats a class, the grades for both instances will appear on the transcript. The student will receive credit toward graduation only once from the same class with the exception of activity classes (band, choir, weight training, etc.) as noted in the class description.
PowerSchool is a program for parents and students to view the student’s schedule, grades and attendance information via the Internet. To access this program, parents and students create an account. The web-based program provides an instant access to accurate, current, and confidential information about the student’s attendance, grades, and class assignments. All staff members at Grandville High School may be contacted by telephone (voicemail) and email. The listing is sent in the August newsletter, and is also available online, at the fall open house, at parent-teacher conferences, etc.
INCOMPLETES | In cases where unusual circumstances prevent a student from completing all the work for a class by the end of the grading period, the teacher may award an incomplete (I) grade. This is a temporary grade that must be resolved within two weeks of the end of the marking period for which the “I” was given. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with the teacher to complete the work and resolve the grade. An “I” that is unresolved at the end of the two-week time period will become an “F.”
PASS/FAIL | Students who take a zero hour course will receive credit but will not receive a grade. A "D" grade will be required to earn a passing (P) grade, which will not affect the grade point average. A failure will be recorded as an "F" and will be used in determining the grade point average. Students will receive a grade for all other courses. Pass-fail credit may only be granted by permission of the principal and is intended for situations where there are extenuating circumstances.
INDEPENDENT STUDY | Independent study is available on a very limited basis and must have administrative approval. Students approved for an independent study must report daily to the advisor for attendance and remain in the classroom with the advisor throughout the semester during the designated independent study hour. The completed application must be submitted by the end of the first week of the semester to the Counseling Office. All independent study classes require an administrative signature/approval. Grading is on a Pass/Fail basis.
