Previous co-op students were asked to give constructive suggestions on improving the Co-op experience. Here is what they had to say:


Advice for a Positive Work Environment

  • Never refuse an opportunity to learn.
  • Communication with your employer is key.
  • If you want to try something at work, speak up.
  • Be sure to clearly organize your work hours with your employer before you start.
  • Try as hard as possible.
  • On your first work day, take a deep breath and relax before you walk in the door.


Advice Regarding the Co-op Program

  • Make sure you get your hours in throughout your placement - don't leave it until the last minute. Same goes for assignments.
  • Keep up with the school news via the website - so you don't miss out on anything important.
  • Students should have a "trial run" at their workplace.
  • I didn't know what to expect on integration days - expect a lesson and assignments!
  • Set aside time to submit your hours online and complete a weekly journal.
  • Students need training on how to behave appropriately and professionally at their placement.


General Advice

  • This experience has given me the confidence to pursue a career in this field.
  • The people you meet are important because you never know when you will need a contact in the future.
  • It will give you a firm grasp on your field of interest.
  • It's highly beneficial to learn "in the field".
