The A.B. Lucas S.S. Music Department is well-equipped with multiple areas for classes and ensembles. From two large classrooms, to direct access onto the large auditorium stage, students can rehearse within their ensembles in a real performance space. The auditorium can seat up to 400 audience members, and is equipped with all of the light and audio equipment that is needed for live performances.
We are fortunate enough to have multiple places within the confines of the Music Department for students to practice and develop their personal musicianship. Five practice rooms are available for personal practice time and rehearsing in small ensembles, as well as other practice spaces around the confines of the Department. These areas can be accessed during class time, lunch hour, or if arranged in advance, after school.
Here at the A.B. Lucas Music Department, we take pride in maintaining our Instrument Inventory on a regular basis, both through purchases of new instruments and repairs on our current instruments each year. During COVID-19 restrictions and regulations, we are fortunate enough to assign every student their own instrument for use throughout the year, without having to worry about sharing with peers. Currently we have over 225 instruments available for student loan, as well as a well-equipped percussion section for our large performance space.
We are always looking to expand on our current inventory in order to provide the best experience for our students. The latest endeavour in this regard is The Marimba Fund, where donors can contribute to the purchase of a new marimba. More information can be found here.
The long-standing music tradition at A.B. Lucas S.S. means that the Music Department has an extensive Instrumental and Vocal/Choral library, spanning from traditional pieces throughout the eras, to modern day jazz and pop tunes. The variety within our inventories includes everything from solo material to large scale ensembles, across all different levels of instruction. These libraries are constantly being updated to meet the needs and demands of the Department.
The A.B. Lucas Music Department has plans in place to expand on the current workspaces and resources available to our students in order to meet even more of the needs of the 21st Century Learner. One area of improvement is to build on the computer space within the department to serve as an area for using Music and Technology through the form of MIDI instruments, working with DAWs, and editing recorded files. By providing the appropriate enhancements needed in software and equipment, students will be able to expand on their knowledge and experience in more diverse areas of the music industry.
