Types of Grazing Systems:
Continuous: same paddock the whole season
Rotational grazing: rotated through several paddocks on a set rotation.
Management Intensive Grazing: system with VARIABLE RECOVERY PERIODS. Animals are moved to a new paddock only when it has fully re-grown based on plant regrowth time and requirements.
High density of stock (hoof trample and incorporate residue)
Small area, short period of time
portable feeder, salt, water
shade (portable?) provided as needed
*** The best aggregated soils are those that have been in long term grass production.
***Manure produced on grass based farms is important for fertility, productivity, and regenerative agriculture but the management is KEY.
Animal Observation: a few things to know about ruminants
Look at their Left side, under the short ribs for a triangle shape that indicates fill
ruminants eat now, chew later
monitor well being: manure, fill, body condition, behavior
Health Concerns on Pasture:
Bloat
Grass Tetany
Selenium deficiency
Hardware disease
Toxicity
Parasites
Ways to Improve or Renovate a Pasture:
soil test (nutrient applications)
tweak the system
frost seed
trample seed (moist conditions)
no till drill seeds
reseeding
