Alongside the "Old Yard" one will find this rock from the Little River. It signifies the first land in Gorham touched by John Phinney and his son, as they landed the boat used on their inland journey up the Presumpscott River from Falmouth.
"This monument was erected by James O. Hamlen of Portland, Maine great grandson of Jacob Hamlen who settled in Gorham about 1743 and was prominently identified with the early history of the town. This lot of land was presented to the town in 1770 by Mr Hamlen for use as a burying ground and accepted with an address of thanks as a town meeting held April 3, 1771."
