John Phinney Baxter built the Baxter Memorial Library in 1908 for the town of Gorham. James Phinney Baxter was Mayor of Portland and the father of Percival Baxter, Governor of Maine.
On the library's wall, you can find a poem written by James Phinney Baxter. It reads, "Who learns and learns but does not what He knows, is One who plows and plows but never sows."
