'Amazing' reduction in Alzheimer's risk verified by blood markers, study says
When penny Ashord's father was dianosed with early-stage Alzheimer's diseade at age 62, she knew the devastating brain disorder might one day steal her memory. In her late 50's, her free-floating anxiety turned into outright panic when she began struggling to find words.
"I couldn't tell a story. I couldn't get my words out," said Ashord, now 61.
" i remember sitting at a dinner party ine time, and i couldn't finish my thoughts. It was the most unbelievable moment. i came home and sobbed and told my husband, 'Something is worng with me. i can't talk," she said. ' i was pettrified.'
Today, after a complete revamp of her kifestyle and overall health, Ashford's struggles with retrieving words have eased, while measures of amyloid and tau proteins and neuroinflammation - all hallmark signs of Alzheimer's - have fallen.
Ashfoed knows about these improvements because she's part of a unique study tracking her progress via key blood biomarkes now being used to help diagnose early dementia.
Instead of relying on painful spinal taps and expensive brain scans, these blood tests are heralded as a new, less invasive and time-consuming way to determine risk and aid in an earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer's .
The preliminary data, presented Monday at American Academy of Neurology annual meeting in San Siego, analyzed biomarks on 54 participants in an ongoing preventive neurology study. 20250603
Alzheimer's blood tests are the key to widespread prevention of dementia, experts say.
If people can be diagnosed in their doctor's office, they can more immediately move into preventive care and implement lifestyle changes designed to slow the pregression of their disease. 20250604

" It was a very sonstructive meeting. We have a lot more work to do. i not suggest we can j=have one meeting and everything's changed but now we are enganed - very fully engaged, " he said . " I fell better about the relations."

Anna has always dreamed of adventure. Stuck in her corporate job in Canada, her days felt a little mundane. One evening, on a whim, she booked a flight to Tokyo. It would be her first solo trip abroad.
The moment she landed, she was hit with neon lights, unfamiliar chatter and the scent of sizzling. On her second day, wandering a quiet backstreet, she realized she was lost. Her phone was dead. No GPS, no translator - just her and the city.
Panic bubbled up, but before she could spiral , an elderly woman approached. Summoning all her courage, Anna smiled and said " Train station? " The woman chuckled warmly and motioned for her to follow.
They weaved through alleys lined with cherry blossoms and tiny shopds for 15 minites. Finally, the station appeared. The woman nodded, and Anna, heart swelling with gratitude, bowed respectfully.
That moment of such kindness from a stranger left a mark on her. By the time she returner home, she wasn't the same. She held her head high, spoke with more ease, and embraced the unfamiliar. Sometimes, you have to lose yourself to find your way. 20250510
Scientists discover new color'olo' - and there's a link to 'The Wizard of Oz'
A team of scientists claim to have discovered a new colour that no human has ever seen before. But what does 'The Wizard of Oz' have to do with this contested discovery?
The snag is that it's only ever been witnessed by five people in the world - and cannot be seen by the naked eye. 20250507
Indeed, the color, said to be a saturated shade of blue-green, cannot be seen without the help of stimulation by laser.
The researchs from UC Berleley and the University of Washington had laser pulses fired into their eyes. This Oz Vision System technique, named in homage to the Emerald City in the novel " The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", can allow people to see beyoud the normal gamut of colour perception.
"We predicated form the beginning that it would look like an unprecedented colour signal but we didn't know ehat the brain would do with it, said Professor NG. "It was jaw-dropping. It's incredibly saturated."
Prof Ng told the BBC that olo was "more saturated than any coulr that ypu can see in the real world".
The authors of the study believe 'Oz' will help them delve into how the brain creates visual perceptions of the world. As reported by the BBC, it may also allow them to learn more ablout colour blindness or diseased that affect vision.
While it does not not fully capture the colour, the researchs shared an image of a turquoise square to give a sense of the hue. 20250508
Galifornia Gov. Gavin Newsom sues the trump administration on Wednesday, challenging the president's authority to impose sweeping tariffs that have set off a global trade war.
The lawsuit argues that President Donald Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China and a 10% tariffs on all imports is unlawful. The act enables a president to freeze and block transactions in reponse to foreign threats but doesn't allow the president to adopt triffs, the suit says.
The lawsuit , which was filed in the U.S.District Court for Northern District of California, also argues that enacting such tariffs requirs approval from Congress.
Newsom said today that, anticipating highter inflation and higher unmployment from the tariffs, he has downgraded California's economic outlook in a revised budget proposal that he plans to unveil next month.
Though he did not speak to Trump about the lawsuit, he said he =gave the White House a heads up.
The news of the tariffs also tanked the stock market, a huge risk for California, which depends disproportionately on income tax revenue form capital gains earned by the weathiest taxpayers.
20250506
The atate id also particularly vulnerable to other economic pain from the tariffs, because China is California's largest trading partner, propping up manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and major ports.
Other significant pitential impacts for California include driving up the cost of constru ction materials just as Los Angeles begins rebuilding from a series of devastating fires in January.

Chatbots are replacing therapists faster than anyone expected. 20250429
While we're not short on divisive topics in 2025, there are valid reasons as to why we're turning chatbots for emotional support - and why people are also very much against it. So how willing are you to embrace this new form of therapy?
With the technology developing and evolving faster than academic community can study and publish evidence-based studies on it, there's nonetheless a growing body of expert commentary sourrounding AI large language models(LLM) and their ability - or lack thereof - in raplacing real, human, trained psychologists.
Much like the broad reasons people use chatbots, employing them as a digital therapist is also mulyifaceted. In-person therapy is prohibitive, often to the segments of society that nees it most - a session costs between US$100-$300 and wait times to even see someone and hope they're a good fit can be monthe, somthing that's worsened following the pandemic.
Online coundrling with a human on the other end of the phone or laptop is somewhat more accessible, but a monthly subscription can be in excess of $400. 20250430

How microplastics are infiltrating everything you consume. 20250426
Microplastics have infiktrated every part of the planet. They have been found buried in Antarctic Sea ice, within the guts of marine animals inhabiting the deep ocean trenches, and in drinking water aroumd the world. Plastic pollution has been foud on beaches of remote, uninhabited islands and it show up in sea water samples across the planet.
But they aren't just ubiquitous in water -
they are spread widely in soils on land too and can even end up in the food we eat.
Unwittingly, we may br consuming tiny fragments of plastic with almost every bite we take.
The backlash against single-use plastic has seen many companies seekimg to use alternatives that claim to be more boidegradable or compostable. But in some cases these alternatives may actually be compoundimg the microplastic problem.
Research has found that bags labelled as "biodegrable" can take years to disintegrate, and even then they mostly break down into smaller pieces rather than their component chemical parts.
Swapping out plastic packaging for glass could potentially help to resuce exposure.
But it wouls also have environmental repercussions as glass has a higher environmental footprint than plastic.
Fortunatelym there is some hope.
Researches are developing a number of approaches to help get rid of the plastic pollution in our envirpollution. One appeoach has been to turn to fungi and bacteria that feed on plastic, breaking it down in the process. A species if beetle larbae that can devour polystyrene has also offered another potential solution.
Other are looking at using eater filtration techniques or chemical treatments that can remove microplastics.
