Chairman: I’m Harris Cheng. The current chairman and co-founder of Greenvines, a Taiwanese skincare company with a strong emphasis on ESG principles. I’m proud to share that greenvines has successfully obtained B Corp certification. Having met the rigorous standard offered by B impact assessment.
Good afternoon, everyone. I'm pleased to welcome you to this panel discussion focusing on driving positive environmental impact within the cosmetic industry. As we all know, the sector is crucial, and today, we're here to share our previous projects, our insights on eco-friendly behaviors, and the possible future strategies that will contribute to a sustainable future. Let's start with procurement. I will invite the Procurement Director who has been actively involved in aligning practices with ESG principles after we finish our sharing. Also, I invited some other professionals to give us a brief explanation of what the environmental aspect should cover.
First, let's introduce the guests who are here today.
Let’s start with procurement, I will invite the procurement director who has been actively involved in aligning practices with ESG principles after we finish our sharing. Also, I invited some other professionals to give us a brief explanation of what the environmental aspect should cover.
Sustainability Officer: Thank you, Chairman. More and more companies focus on producing sustainable products; therefore, many companies take action to fulfill their social responsibilities. Let’s delve into some ESG goals that ELC has done in these years. Take one of our brands as an example, Estée Lauder, we emphasize that our company will recycle plastic waste and use the materials made from the waste to produce reusable containers. The recycling process is in the flowchart below.
*Polyester: an artificial material that is a kind of plastic, often used for making clothes, bags, tents, etc.
This flowchart shows that Estée Lauder collects plastic waste from consumers, and breaks it down into the ingredients. Then, when the company is going to produce the product, they can use recycled materials. In this way, Estée Lauder reached the environmental goal. Sustainability need everyone's efforts, we are going to develop resources and let every individual have the ability to change the world.
Procurement Director: Thank you, Chairman. In our procurement strategy, we prioritize environmental assessment, social responsibility, fair trade, and indigenous peoples' rights (General Categories). For instance (followed by very concrete examples and explanations), when sourcing materials for our shampoo products, we've actively sought suppliers with a commitment to sustainable sourcing of raw materials. Our company is committed to sustainable development and we are in search of shampoo products that meet Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. This includes using recycled bottles and ensuring that our suppliers adhere to fair labor practices. The image below shows how our corporation recycles empty bottles. First, wash the bottles, Second, click the topic "Empty bottles recycling" in the official LINE account and finally, fill the form and go to 7-11 to send the bottles.
"The benefits of using recycled bottles"
Reduction in pollution: Recycling reduces pollution, as the process of extracting and processing raw materials often leads to air and water pollution.
Economic benefits: Recycling creates jobs in the waste management and recycling sectors.
Reduces greenhouse gas emissions: By saving energy through recycling, greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change are significantly reduced.
Environmental friendliness: The production process of sustainable materials can minimize environmental impact.
Secretary General: Thank you, Chairman. To rejoin part of the Lush’s mission ‘Leave the world Lusher than we found it’, we launched a recycling program called Bring It Back- a fresh new packaging returns scheme enabling customers to bring back any full-sized Lush plastic packaging to their local Lush shop to be recycled. When customers return any plastic Lush item, they will receive a 50p deposit that can be used towards their Lush basket on the same day. The packaging will be sent to Greenhub, Lush's recycling hub in the UK, where it undergoes processing and is forwarded to our UK partners for remodeling into new black Lush pots or repurposed as industry feedstock material.
From the process diagram, it shows how it will work. First, the customers will shop and purchase our products. After they finish using it, consumers need to bring back their clean empty packaging and return to any store in the UK. The customers will then receive rewards for their contributions on making their returns a new life through their actions.
Environmental Department: Good day, chairman. I'm the head of the environmental department at this conference. As the CEO of Burt's Bees, I am proud to share our commitment to producing cosmetics in an eco-friendly manner. At Burt's Bees, we prioritize sustainability at every step of our production process. Starting by carefully selecting natural ingredients from reliable and responsible sources, our commitment to sustainability extends to cultivating and harvesting these ingredients, ensuring that they are ethically sourced and have a minimal environmental impact.
When manufacturing, Burt's Bees is committed to reducing waste at every stage of production. We implement water conservation measures, such as recycling and reusing water wherever feasible. On packaging, We employ strategies to minimize packaging waste, opting for recyclable materials and designing packaging that is both functional and environmentally friendly. Additionally, we actively seek opportunities to recycle and repurpose manufacturing by-products. We understand the importance of responsible production in the beauty industry.
