Math

Division

For the past few weeks we have been working on division of 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. The students are using their knowledge of multiplication facts and the Partial Quotient strategy to solve equations. We will be completing a few different escape rooms to show our understanding of division!

Double Digit Multiplication

The students expanded their understanding of multiplication to multiply 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers. They used the Area Model, the Box Method, and Partial Product strategies to work through equations.

Area Selfies

Students created a selfie on graph paper and then calculated the area of each part and the total area of their selfie!

Santa's Village

Students created Santa's Village according to specific areas for each of the buildings. They also had to calculate the perimeter of each and answer area/perimeter related questions.

December - Area & Perimeter

We have started working on our Area and Perimeter unit. The students were given their own baggies of blocks to create rectangles and squares of a given area or perimeter. They started to soon recognize that multiple shapes can have the same area yet different perimeters. We then moved into drawing the shapes on grid paper to represent the area and perimeter and from there we discovered the formulas for both. We are now working on creating Santa's Village posters that will include building of specific areas. Keep your eyes open for pictures!

November - Multiplication Review

This month we have been reviewing multiplication strategies. We have been doing a lot of practice with our multiplication and division basic facts and most students have really improved on their recall of facts. We also have been working on two digit and three digit by one digit multiplication (taught during online learning in grade 4). The students are breaking apart the numbers to accurately multiply (ex. 64 x 5 would be 60x4 and 5x4). This strategy has really helped students understand the process of multiplication clearly.

We will soon use our multiplication and division skills to work on a unit on area and perimeter.

October - Patterns

Students have explored various number patterns that involve the various operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). They have been representing these patterns using T-tables and have learned to represent the rule using an expression.

We now are moving on to using algebraic equations where students will use a single variable to solve the equation. We started this part of the unit today and I heard a few students say "this is fun!" It's always so nice when students are excited to learn.

One thing that will help all students with this next part of the unit is work with basic facts! Practicing these facts through online games, flashcards, etc. will be a huge benefit to help the students solve these equations more efficiently.

September - Place Value

The students have been working on place value activities using numbers to 1 000 000. As part of this unit we learned how to represent numbers in multiple ways (including word form, standard form, expanded form, and with base 10). Students worked on partitioning numbers (breaking them apart) in multiple ways.
