Unit 1 Daily Work
UNIT 1 Overview of Nervous System
Unit 1- Nervous System Overview
Divisions of the Nervous system
Neuron - nerve, nucleus, cell body, dendrites, axon, myelin sheath, nodes of Ranvier, axon terminals.
Neuron Types - sensory neurons, motor neurons, interneurons.
Action Potential - membrane potential, sodium potassium pumps, K+, Na+, nerve impulse.
Synaptic Transmission
Neurotransmitters - synapse, presynaptic neuron, postsynaptic neuron, types (Inhibitory or Excitatory).
Central Nervous System - brain, spinal cord.
Brain - lobes and parts, with function of each area.
Cerebral Cortex - outer cerebrum, processing senses, gray matter.
Lower Brain Stem - pons, medulla oblongata.
Peripheral Nervous System - somatic nervous system, autonomic nervous system.
Sensory Receptors - chemoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, pain receptors, photoreceptors, thermoreceptors.
Eye- anatomy and physiology
Ear- Anatomy and Physiology.

Sensory, Motor, and Interneurons are
> Sensory = Afferent pseudounipolar neurons
- 5 types of sensory receptors
> Motor = Efferent multipolar neurons
> Interneuron = Bipolar neurons that link sensory & motor neurons
- Talked about what a reflex arc is and how it occurs (knee-jerk reflex)
> Monosynaptic vs Polysynaptic reflexes
> 5 steps involved in a reflex arc

Video- Watch Surviving the Teenage Brain VIDEO posted on the Google Classroom
OR watch https://youtu.be/waEeauOcduk The Science of Teenage Brains
Write a Letter (one page long) to your Parents explaining "your Teenage Brain" and link it to the video you watched in class with specific references to the video. Explain to them why you do "whatever it is that you do" and reflect on how the brain develops now that you better understand the teenage brain. Be sure to include your thoughts on the "digital revolution": How are your electronics impacting you and how can your parents support you with this? Due by Wednesday, April 17th at 3:25pm
OR have your parent/guardian email me to my hrce email account, holmesd@hrce.ca
telling me that you had a conversation with them about the video and what you learned about your brain by watching this video. The email needs details on what you and your parent talked about, not just simply that you had a conversation. Explain the role of social media in your teenage life. What is a social contract? Would you consider that? Due by Friday, April 12th at 3:25pm, at the latest. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF THE EMAIL so I know who is getting the points for the email from your guardian.

Blood Sugar and Diabetes Worksheets
What are "normal" blood sugar levels?
You might want to measure your blood sugar before meals to get a baseline, and then two hours after your meal to measure your "normal blood sugar level". Your doctor might also suggest measuring blood sugar before bed to be sure you have been eating well throughout the day and can go to sleep with peace of mind.
These are considered within the range of "normal" for blood sugar:
Less than 140 mg/dl if you do not have diabetes.
Less than 180 mg/dl if you have diabetes.
