Attached are some links for current students and their parents. The Daily Work link will allow students/parents to see what has been assigned and when any homework is due. The Daily Work link will also allow students/parents to see, in general, what has been covered in class and when it was covered. This will allow students to determine any notes they may be missing.
Below is an overview of the course:
The Biology 11 course is broken down into 4 topics which are covered over the course of one semester. These outlines are in my words, but you can check out the curriculum document for the Biology 11 course in the words of The Nova Scotia Department of Education. Click here to visit the curriculum document website.
Unit 1: Matter and Energy for Life =30%
This starts off with the cell theory and works its way through the internal workings of a cell. We’ll be examining plant, animal and bacterial cells. How do cells work? How does stuff get in and out of cells? What are some of the differences between plant and animal cells? All of these questions will be answered in this topic.
Unit 2: Biodiversity=25%
There are so many different types of living things on this planet. Did you know there are six different “Kingdoms” of life? You probably know 2 of them: Animal and Plant. However, can you name the other ones? In this unit we will look at all six kingdoms and how they are classified.
Unit 3: Maintaining Dynamic Equilibrium I= 35%
We will look at what goes on inside the body when we eat, breathe, sleep and play. How does our body maintain a certain temperature? Or a certain amount of energy? Where and how does food digest in our bodies? What role does blood play in distributing glucose around our bodies? These are the types of questions we will deal with for this topic.
Unit 4: Interactions Among Living Things (Independent Project) =10%
What the heck is an ecosystem? What types of things affect the various living things inside an ecosystem? Does this have an affect on the human population? Everything we do affects so many other living things. In this unit we will look at these questions or you can choose to research a topic of interest to you..
