We have started a group of our students of African Heritage here at FBJH this year. Advisors are Ms. MacDonald, school counsellor and Shelley McNeil, School Plus. We meet each week to have a chat and learn interesting things about diverse authors, opportunities, and celebrate heritage and culture of African descendant people. We have had a few meetings with African support worker from Bayview High School as well as a few students from high school.
Our group is called A ROOM TO TALK- after a book in which a group of students met in a similar way .
Early in our meeting we had the chance to learn about diverse authors we have here at school in our library and classroom book collection. We hope to make some BLM tshirts for staff and learn about African heritage cooking, bring in guest speakers, as well as develop a mural for the school.
Last year we went to visit the Black Cultural Centre in Cherrybrook.
We also competed in the Halifax library African Canadian Trivia Challenge
