Beginning Band Without Barriers
There is a wide variety of band enrichment opportunities for learners within HRM and throughout Nova Scotia. Below you will find a list of extra-curricular band activities that are well suited for learners in their first few years of playing a band instrument. There are scholarship and bursary options available for those who require financial assistance. If you or your child is interested in an of these opportunities, do not hesitate to reach out to me for additional information.
The Nova Scotia Band Association hosts this event annually at various locations across the province. Beginner band students have the opportunity to work with experienced band educators and instrument clinicians to explore new music, continue to develop individual instrument skills, make new friends, and have fun making music together! This is a great opportunity for young musicians who are looking for additional instruction on their instrument, fundamentals of playing in a band, and gaining experience playing in a large ensemble while learning new music.
Date and location for 2025/2026 school year- TBD
An email will be sent to families of beginner band students when details for the 2025/2026 school year are confirmed.
Each year during the month of July, Acadia University holds a week-long intensive band camp for musicians in grades 5 and above. They offer programs for all performance levels including a beginner band program for those with no previous experience who are interested in learning a band instrument, or musicians who are currently enrolled in their school band program. Throughout the week, students will participate in small ensembles and receive coaching on their instrument. The program will also include several faculty concerts and will end with a student concert to showcase all they have learned throughout the week.
This year, Acadia University’s Summer Music Camp will take place from July 5-11 2026. Registration available in March 2026.
Bursaries and scholarships available through HRCE.

This is a provincial ensemble that invites interested musicians from grades 6-10 across the Nova Scotia to participate in two weekends per year of music, usually held in November and March. One weekend is usually held in the metro area, and the other weekend’s location rotates around the province each year. Each weekend includes rehearsals, instrument sectionals, social activities, and a concert held at the end. This is a great experience for young musicians looking for additional musical opportunities and making new friends!
Bursaries are available based on financial need. Applications can be found here.
