In January 2024, a number of teachers and literacy coaches across the province began piloting the thinkSRSD method as an effective, evidence-based practice for teaching writing. In AVRCE, nearly half of our middle level literacy teachers have received training and have begun using POWeR and TIDE. Early results are very promising! See the slideshow (left) for some information about SRSD, and some preliminary before and after student writing pieces after four weeks of the pilot in April 2024.
Six in-depth ThinkSRSD training modules created by the pilot team in June 2024. Updated January 2025.
A series of lessons designed for explicit instruction of the various components of POWER and TIDE. Lessons from The Syntax Project have been aligned with the stages of POWER to support sentence-level instruction. To be used in subsequent cycles after the initial launch cycle. Lessons use a combination of explicit instruction, modeling, and guided practice to reinforce skills and concepts.

Self-Regulating & Goal-Setting
These cycles have been tested with students across the AVRCE and are ready for you to open, use, or adapt to your own students' needs. Cycles include the mentor text, prompt, organizers, and exemplars to use for backmapping, editing, and revising.

Organizers & Scaffolds
Graphic organizers can be a useful scaffold when teaching students the components of POWeR and TIDE. The goal over time, however, is independence with the process, meaning they should eventually learn to sketch their Gist Statement, Do/What, and TIDE without the support of a graphic organizer.
A helpful teacher resource when crafting prompts for student writing.
Helpful sentence starters for each section of TIDE. Designed to be used as a scaffold that students will eventually no longer need or use.
Editing, Revising, and Evaluating Writing
Use when teaching students to mark exemplars and their own work according to each section of their TIDE chart, rather than as a whole. Eventually, they should start using the Scoring & Goal-Setting Rubric to the right, which is aligned with the Nova Scotia Analytic Writing Rubric.
A more student-friendly version of the scoring and goal-setting rubric above. Combines the language of the simplified 4-point scale above with ThinkSRSD criteria and the Nova Scotia Analytic Writing Rubric. Also provides relevant curriculum connections for PowerTeacher entries.
AVRCE Student Writing Samples
Compiled since our collaborative assessment work in 2023-2024, these documents contain scored and annotated samples of AVRCE student writing from Grades 6-8. They contain both examples of traditional "writing to a prompt," such as students would encounter on a provincial assessment, as well as scored ThinkSRSD writing samples that have been completed over time. Use these for your own reference when evaluating your students' writing, or use them with your students. These documents will continue to be updated as ThinkSRSD expands in our region and student writing reflects this change!
