Google Meet is a web-based tool for Macintosh and an iOS app for iPad that supports synchronous communication for video, voice, screen sharing, and text chat. It’s Google’s latest evolution of its Hangouts tool.
Goochland County is committed to providing educational continuity through a lens of equity. Because Google Hangouts Meet provides the capability of connecting both internet users and phone calls, it should prove to be an equitable platform to connect with students, especially in the context of holding office hours. Please be forewarned, however, that if you are connecting students by phone, that the use of the visual components of the platform should be minimized (i.e., screen sharing) and text chat.

Using your Google ID, we will be offering access to a service called Google Meet. You can access this tool three ways:
(1) after signing in with your Google Account either online (Macs, home computers) or
(2) by using the app (iPads), and (Google account information can be found on the sticker on the back of PreK - 3rd Grade iPads)
(3) by phone.
You must abide by school rules while using this tool and make good decisions related to digital citizenship. Do not broadcast inappropriate images, do not say or chat inappropriate language. Instead, use it to contribute to discussions and ask questions. We will use this tool to support your learning at home.
Your teacher will share a Meet URL with you. Follow this link to access Meet online. If you’re not using a MacBook, your computer should have a microphone. Before you join the online session, you can mute your camera (no image) and your microphone.
You will need to install the Hangouts Meet by Google app by going to Self Service on your iPad and installing the app. You can also use a home device (cell phone, for example) to install the same app (free for Android and iPhone) to connect.
Your teacher will share a Meet URL with you. When connecting via the app, you may need to type in the code for your meeting. This code is the last ten letters of the web address your teacher will share with you.
Your teacher will share with you a phone number and a PIN code to connect via telephone. If you are using a cell phone, please mute your call and unmute your phone when it’s your time to speak. After dialing the phone number, the PIN code is used to put you into the correct meeting.
Once a Google Meet has been joined, another app can be opened and Google Meet will continue to run in the background. Audio will still be available. Apple's Multitasking (split screen) can also be used to use another app alongside Google Meet.
Your teacher has the capacity to record your online meetings. You will be asked to comply with this feature or be warned (by phone) when recording is turned on. Please remember to exercise good judgement with online behavior.
