Apps, or applications, are programs students use on iPad to support their learning. In this section, we are going to highlight some commonly used apps to help our parents better understand what learning enhanced with iPad looks like throughout our schools.
Services are resources we use—some free and some paid—with our apps or through a web browser like Safari. Your students may talk about some of these services. Typically services work on iPad but also on other devices, such as a laptop or desktop computer. Services require an account to login to access the service. As an example, Schoology is both a service and an app.
Apps are distributed to our iPads through our mobile device management solution called Jamf Pro. Unlike your phone, students do not install apps themselves through the App Store. Teachers can request apps through our instructional technology department and then they will be made available through an app called Self Service. Students are then able to download apps they need on demand.
The best way to explore the apps present on your child's iPad is to find some time to poke around and explore them together with your child. The ones highlighted here represent a cross-section of apps that go from very general use (to create typed documents) toward providing specific help in core subjects like reading and math.
By exploring the apps opposite, we hope to illustrate some popular apps and the benefits they provide students.
Students at Goochland Elementary use their iPad to access an app called Google Expeditions. This app requires participation of the teacher to lead students through immersive virtual reality content where students can explore environments from across the world, from oceans, to historical locations. By moving the iPad around, students can see a portal into a field trip-like experience. This app requires internet access and an invitation from the teacher to lead the virtual tour.
