What is a Young Carer?
Young carers are children and young people (usually under 18) who help look after someone in their family who has an illness, disability, mental health condition, or struggles with substance misuse.
They may care for:
A parent
A sibling
Another relative living in the same home
What do young carers do?
Young carers often take on responsibilities that would usually be done by adults, such as:
Helping with personal care (washing, dressing)
Doing household jobs (cooking, cleaning, shopping)
Looking after brothers or sisters
Giving emotional support
Helping manage medication or appointments
How can it affect them?
Being a young carer can be very challenging. It may:
Impact their schoolwork or attendance
Affect their mental health and wellbeing
Limit time for friends, hobbies, and rest
However, some young carers also develop strong skills like responsibility, empathy, and resilience.
Why is it important to recognise young carers?
It’s important that young carers are identified so they can:
Get the support they need
Have time to learn, relax, and socialise
Feel understood and supported in school and beyond
