English Language Proficiency Testing
What to Expect If You’re Asked to Complete the English Language Proficiency Screening
Some students enrolling at Glenbard West may be required to complete the WIDA Screener, a state-mandated assessment that helps determine eligibility for English Learner (EL) support services. According to Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) guidelines, students are screened if their Home Language Survey indicates a language other than English is spoken at home, or if their date of arrival to the U.S. suggests they may benefit from language development support.
The WIDA Screener is not a pass/fail test - it simply helps our team understand how to best support new students as they begin their academic journey at Glenbard West.
Below is an example of the communication sent to students who are asked to participate in screening.
Dear Prospective Student,
Based on your date of arrival to the United States or how your parent/guardian responded to the Home Language Survey, you may be asked to complete the WIDA Screener. This is a required assessment used to determine your English language proficiency, which helps us understand how to best support your academic success at Glenbard West.
Location:
Please arrive at Door 2 on Circle Drive. You may be dropped off and do not need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. When you arrive, please tell security that you are here to see Ms. Andrea Contreras, our English Learner (EL) Coordinator.
Test Duration:
The assessment usually takes about 2 hours to complete, though some students may finish sooner.
What to Bring:
We recommend bringing a bottle of water and a small snack for your comfort.
How to Prepare:
There’s nothing you need to study. Just try to get a good night’s sleep the night before and eat a healthy meal that morning to help you stay focused.
We’re excited to welcome you to Glenbard West and are here to support you every step of the way. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions!
