Dates to Remember

*As part of a school-wide practice, students at Hopewell do not wear costumes to school.  We are also not permitted to have any food from outside of school as a part of our classroom celebrations.*

School-to-Home Connection

Letter Sounds and Rhyming

Please review rhyming and  letter sounds with your child. It is important to prompt your child for letter sounds  in two ways:

Here are some great websites for rhyming,  letter identification and sound practice:

              Starfall.com

PBS Kids Alphabet Matchup

              PBS Kids Rhyme 'n Roll

Sight Words

Access kindergarten and first grade sight word lists, titled Reading List A, B, and C on the Class Resources page of this site.  List A is critical for kindergarten students. The first grade list is included because different students are at different levels. The first grade list is the list of words that the students will be expected to learn by the end of first grade. Please begin reviewing the kindergarten list with your child so he or she can become a more confident reader.

Other Ways to Support Your Child's Learning

Have your child go on a shape hunt at home. How many different shapes can he/she find?

Talk about good hygiene and what you do as a family to stay healthy.

Ask your child about their favorite season. Discuss pros and cons of each season and about places that do not experience all 4 seasons.

Classroom Update

Math

In Math, the students are learning to describe and identify 2D and 3D shapes. Shapes we are focusing on are: squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres.

Social Studies and Science

In our All About Me unit we are learning about fire prevention and making healthy choices. We are learning to practice good hygiene such as washing our hands, and coughing and sneezing into our elbow to prevent the spread of germs.

During the fall months we will be exploring the weather in our science unit. We will talk about the effects of the sun, patterns in local weather, and the use of weather forecasting to prepare and respond to severe weather. At the end of the unit, students will work in groups to design, build, and test a shelter structure to protect an "animal" from the weather.
