School-to-Home Connection

Ways to Support Your Child's Learning

Practice adding and subtracting 0-5 objects (or more) in your home. You could use toys like legos, food such as carrots, or paperclips and papers. Be creative!

When your child is reading and gets stuck on  a word, encourage them to use their strategies:  picture power, snap word power, sound power, reread power, etc.

Talk about the roles of different people at your child's school and in our Glastonbury community (e.g. teachers, nurse, principal, police, librarians, etc.)

Ask your child to tell you all about their domino project and their wrecking ball experiments! Can they "construct" similar experiments using materials they might find in your home? Be creative!

Classroom Update

Math

In Math, we are working on addition and subtraction of the numbers 0-5 and beyond.

Language Arts

We are working on making our reading Superpowers even stronger as we work toward reading more challenging books. For example, instead of using our sound power to just make the first sound of the word, we are now using our super-sound power to make the sound of the blend at the beginning of the word.  We also are making sure to look all the way through the word to look for word parts and looking at the ending sounds.

Social Studies and Science

In our unit, All About Our School and Community, students are learning about the places in our community and the people who work in our community.

During the winter, kindergarten students will study the "Moving and Grooving" unit in science. Students will explore the effects of different strengths and different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object. As an engineering task, students will design a device to knock down dominoes. They will also conduct a "construction" experiment changing the strength and direction of a "wrecking ball" so they can knock down a wall without knocking down nearby houses.
