Classroom Update

Language Arts

In our Reader's Workshop mini-lessons, we have learned that there are three ways to read a book.  We can look at the pictures and tell a story, we can tell a story we already know and we can read the words.

As we work on the  "look at the pictures and tell a story" way of reading, we have begun to practice telling a story like a storyteller would (using book language) and talking like the character would.  We are having a lot of fun practicing those skills and discovering that some of us are budding actors!

When we "tell a story we already know," we have learned to retell a story by telling what happened in the beginning, middle, and end, being sure to include details about the characters, setting, problem, and solution.

During our "just right reading" time, as we work to "read the words," we have been practicing putting our Reading Finger (pointer finger) under each word as we read. We have been introduced to the following sight words: I, a, can, is, see, in, to, the, we, my, like, am, look, here.

Math

In Math, we are learning how to count and match numerals 6-10. We are also learning how to compare numerals 6-10.  We are using a variety of materials and a lot of ten frames to help us develop a solid understanding of the relationship between numbers 1-10.  Soon, we will begin to use two ten frames for each number as we move on to building the teen numbers.

Social Studies and Science

In our All About Us unit, we are learning about families and how people within a family show their care for each other.

During the fall months we will be exploring the weather in our science unit. We will talk about the effects of the sun, patterns in local weather, and the use of weather forecasting to prepare and respond to severe weather. *At the end of the unit, students will work in groups to design, build, and test a shelter structure to protect an "animal" from the weather. During this unit, students will take a field trip to the Glastonbury Planetarium to view the "One World, One Sky" program.* (Unfortunately, we are unable to participate in these activities this year).
