Throughout the year, we will meet with each grade level to deliver evidence-based and developmentally appropriate lessons. These lessons may include topics such as stress management, organizational skills, mindfulness, study strategies, career exploration, etc. We have provided more information about each lesson below.
In our first lesson, we introduce ourselves and other key aspects of the counseling program. At the very end, we help students join their grade level specific Google Classroom that we will be utilizing to push information out throughout the year.
The following goals are for the 2-day lesson we conducted with 8th graders.
Students will understand what a GPA is and be able to calculate theirs.
Students will comprehend the importance of a transcript.
Students will be able to identify the 5 different Endorsements.
Students will differentiate Endorsements and Programs of Study.
Students will identify the graduation requirements.
Students will create their PGPs.
Afterwards, students had the opportunity to go to the high school to learn more about the Programs of Study offered. We will continue to refine their PGPs based on their interests, parent collaboration, and advice from their high school counselor.
We conducted this lesson with 6th and 7th graders right before course selections so that students were already in the mindset of future planning. We provided 7th graders with the opportunity to take an Interest Profiler and explore matching careers, whereas 6th graders focused more on their student portfolio. Below are the goals for the lesson:
Students will apply decision-making skills to career planning, course selection, and career transition.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the career-planning process.
Students will demonstrate awareness that education and training is needed to achieve career goals.
Students will understand what a GPA is and be able to calculate theirs.
Students will comprehend the importance of a resume.
7th grade only: Students will complete an Interest Profile and save one occupation.
