The course focused on highlighting the importance of learning the law and then diving into the world of media. What media liability means and to know how to even speak to a legal counsel, be it in the state we are studying this in or anywhere in order to be able to protect ourselves and the work we do and publish. The course focuses on several different topics ranging from hate speech to defamation to privacy to information access. It detailed how it was important to study a mix of constitutional, common law, statutory and regulatory systems of media accountability, and in many regions of the world there is usually religious and traditional law to consider which existed in almost every legal system in the world. The course then looked at the unique features of the legal systems in different states that were of significance to us. The course went from detailing international human rights law and free expression theory to communications law.
