Fall 2025 Faculty Conference | Fri 8.15 & Mon 8.18
We are pleased that you will be joining the faculty in an adjunct capacity as we pursue together our academic mission to offer a Christ-centered education that prepares students to think with clarity, act with integrity, and serve with purpose.
In order to get your semester started strong, we've created this course to guide you through some basic aspects of what it means to understand George Fox University as a new adjunct faculty member.
This orientation comes in two broad "movements."
This part will be on your own.
In Movement One, you'll work through asynchronous material designed to introduce you to institutional culture, systems, and resources. In the eight parts, you will learn about George Fox's history and mission, understand the resources available to support your teaching, and become familiar with academic policies.
Please review these materials prior to attending Adjunct Orientation.
Scroll down to access Movement One.
(If you are hired after August 19th, you can skip Movement Two.)
Attend a virtual New Adjunct Orientation, held on
Tuesday, August 19th (6:30-8:00 pm), via Zoom.
This is an opportunity to hear from key leaders, build a community cohort, and have your questions answered!
Access the AGENDA and the ZOOM LINK here.
If you missed orientation… You can watch a video recording at this link:
To be added after August 19th
We've designed these materials for you to go at your own pace as long as you've reviewed all of them prior to Adjunct Orientation on August 19th. We anticipate that the entire movement will take about 110 minutes.

Follow the steps in the appropriate column below to incorporate language into your fall syllabi, and make sure you understand the resources available for your students.
UNDERGRADUATE
The Academic Resource Center (The ARC)
Quick ARC overview: The ARC provides in-person appointments primarily for traditional undergraduates. Zoom appointments are available if necessary. If you want to require ARC appointments for student writing assignments, email the_arc@georgefox.edu to make arrangements. We want to coordinate timing and student numbers to ensure we have capacity. Student support staff can visit classes to provide students with an overview of ARC services. Math and Sciences have their own help labs (times to be updated)
Student Support Network (Fox 360)
Disability & Accessibility Services (DAS)
Syllabi Language *Add the language for learning support services (e.g., DAS, Fox360, etc.) to all of your Fall 2024 syllabi, making sure to choose the information that best fits your classes.
Lib Guide - Creating Accessible Content * Incorporate at least one element into your fall classes.
GRADUATE
Quick VLC overview: The VLC provides Zoom writing consultations with an option for asynchronous feedback. The center focuses on graduate and GFD students; if desired, these students may schedule in-person appointments with undergraduate consultants at the ARC (on the Newberg campus).

Thank you for agreeing to serve as an adjunct instructor here at George Fox University! We are grateful for your desire to share your skills and talents with our students.
May you be encouraged in this good work. (1 Thes. 15:58)
Syllabus
Leverage this document as it is often your first introduction to students. Make it clear and accessible. Develop reasonable expectations for your course, put these in your syllabus and then stick to the syllabus.
Communication
Consistent and regular communication is needed. Students are expected to use their GFU email for official communication. Avoid giving your cell phone (let them know your response time). To minimize email, you may want to encourage them to ask questions during class.
Attendance
Decide if attendance is part of their course grade. Take attendance at each class session and document in Canvas. If a failing grade is posted at the end of the semester, you must post the last date of attendance, so you need to know when that occurred.
Final exams
Be sure to give your final exam at the scheduled time.
Grades
Your “grade book” must be turned in to your department’s administrative assistant, after posting grades, for our records. This includes all grades used to compute the FINAL grade. The simplest way to do this is to use Canvas for grading and download the full list of grades as a spreadsheet. Please post the midterm grades.
Student evaluations
All links to course evaluations are delivered directly to the student via email. We recommend providing time during class in order to get the best response rate.
Be consistent: Treat students equitably. Some may seek extra credit. If you offer this, be sure all opportunities for credit are available to all students.
Rely on electronic resources - Use the class Canvas site to upload, avoid copying.
Decide on open or closed computers: You may want to vary expectations based on assignments, engagement.
There is no expectation for you to have a Zoom option available.
Rely on your Department Chair
Late Work: From the catalog guidelines for receiving late work: “Class work missed because of absence may be made up only in the case of prolonged or confining illness, death of relatives, or similar emergencies.” However, you must also accept late work from students with an excused absence from an official university event. Students should notify you in advance of these expected absences. Have your late work policy clearly spelled out in your syllabus.
Do not modify class time: Class meeting times are fixed. Talk to your department chair for any deviations from scheduled times that you might be considering.
Missing class: If you must miss a class, please notify your department chair and Admin Assistant as soon as you know this will happen. Provide as much notice as possible. You are expected to hold all class sessions specified in your syllabus and in keeping with the seat hours assigned to your course.
How to obtain an ID Card
Our IT department has created an online ID Card request form! This is important for those who will be on campus, and it is not necessary if you will be teaching remotely. You may request your ID card prior to your arrival on campus by completing the form, and pick it up at IT Services located on the third floor of the Stevens building when you arrive. You must have your ID# and George Fox email address to access the form, and have a digital picture of yourself ready to upload.
