Week Seven - October 11th, 2024
Dear Parents,
We place great emphasis on mental health and wellbeing at GIS, and I have been so impressed by the focus in both schools on Mental Health Week. Advisory sessions and homeroom periods have taken place on stress, self-care, self-efficacy and coping mechanisms. We have had assemblies on recognizing and handling stress, by external speaker Ms Amarylis Harris from Reverse Psychology. An excellent video was produced by Mr Lewis and students. We have also seen ConnectEd sessions on Resilience, by Shane Mulligan, Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychologist from Vivamus, and on Digital Wellness by DHA Counsellor, Jackie Greenwood, and Clinical Neuropsychologist, Helena Gil Martin. Thursday was ‘green day’ in recognition of wellbeing and the staff had professional development sessions delivered by external speakers also. Well done to all staff and students involved in the organization of these events.
We have a new ‘baby’ to celebrate in the GIS community – this time a baby grand piano! This is a recent addition to our lobby, as the previous piano is now in our music department. It has been too quiet in the mornings and we look forward to Ms Romien and our talented students welcoming us again with their repertoire.
I enjoyed meeting Russian speaking parents this week, following my meeting last week with Arabic speakers. I presented on IB themes and the journey through the school, along with plans for the future and gave an opportunity for questions. I shall be giving further presentations and look forward to meeting more parents soon. Every parent must have a chance to come and we shall advertise soon.
This week’s interviewers of the Principal were KG2E children. Armed with clipboards, they behaved impeccably and took turns asking me about my role and the school community. Thank you to Ms Charlotte for organizing this.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Our Iranian, Egyptian and Latino parents have already started to welcome returning and new parents on a nice breakfast gathering.
We encourage all GIS communities to get together and keep us posted.
