Week Seven - October 11th, 2024
Grades 6-12
Ensuring Additional Support for All Students.
This academic year we are launching a new support initiative for all students at GIS. Academic Priority is a system of academic support for students that they can access in addition to their regular classes across all departments.
Each department holds a session once a week. The exact timings and locations for each department can be found on the Academic Priority Schedule posted below. This is also available on ManageBac.
Academic priority is staffed by teachers from the departments, ensuring that students have access to the teachers they need. Any student who needs additional support, has a question or just wants to discuss a particular topic is welcome at Academic Priority. There are no fixed topics for a session. The teacher will provide support based on the individual student’s needs on a particular day.
In addition, teachers make themselves available to any student who needs support whenever possible. We are looking forward to the impact Academic Priority will have on our students progress and attainment.
Grades 6 and 7
In our ELL Grade 6 and 7 classes, students have been busy constructing simple sentences and identifying nouns and verbs. One Grade 6 student was excited to use her word-to-word dictionary while creating posters about what makes us feel positive in life, while some Grade 7 students made posters to revise their Individuals and Societies vocabulary. Others enjoyed reading books on origami, blending their love for reading with hands-on creativity. Currently, we are exploring regular and irregular verbs to help students gain confidence with basic tenses, laying a strong foundation for their language learning.
Grade 12
This week, during the advisory periods on Tuesday and Thursday grade 7 and 8 engaged in a scavenger hunt organized by DP2 students, Celine Salamah, Manal Kazi, Lana Hasan, Saeed Alzarooni and Dhia Mosbahi. The aim of this initiative was to spread awareness about cyberbullying during mental health week in order to further enhance the students’ knowledge on the impacts of cyberbullying on mental health. The students were shown a video showcasing how the impacts of cyberbullying impacted Saeed, the students were then instructed to find him using the clues he left behind. Each clue is embedded with information regarding cyberbullying and reveals the whereabouts of the next location. The group who completed all of the clues first were given medals by Saeed himself.
