Earth Science

Welcome to the new school year of 2020 - 2021! I am excited to get to know everyone and to grow with you all in the process. I love Science! Science is a gift. Science helps us to understand the world while allowing us to discover new things and builds curiosity. We use science in our everyday life. We just may not know it, but it is all around us. Without science, where would we be? Science is important and most especially it is FUN! During our time together, I would like to remind you that my job is to help support you as much as possible. However, we get out exactly as much as we put into our learning. I hope you put it all in and make the most of it! It’s more fun that way and don't forget to smile! Happy Learning!

Best Wishes, Ms. Cruz

WHERE DID ALL THIS RAIN COME FROM? ☂️🌧️ JULY - MID OCTOBER IS TYPICALLY RAINY SEASON HERE ON GUAM! ACCORDING TO CLIMATE CENTRAL, HEAVY RAINS ARE A SIGN OF CLIMATE CHANGE. FOR EVERY DEGREE FARENHEIT THE EARTH GETS WARMER, WATER EVAPORATES FASTER. THUS CAUSING HEAVY RAINS! SO WHAT ABOUT ALL THESE FLASH FLOODS? FLASH FLOODS ARE CAUSED BY AN OVERFLOW IN STREAMS, RIVERS, AND WATERS. IN SIMPLIER TERMS, THINK OF IT AS A CUP FULL AND YOU ADDED MORE WATER TO IT, THE CUP WOULD OVERFLOW AND FLASH FLOOD EVERYWHERE LEAVING YOU WITH A BIG OL' MESS! STAY SAFE EVERYONE! ISN'T THE WEATHER FASCINATING THOUGH?

THE MOON IS OUR CLOSEST NEIGHBOR, BUT THERE IS STILL SO MUCH TO LEARN ABOUT THE MOON. NASA CREATED A DAY TO NATIONALLY OBSERVE THE MOON. THIS IS A TIME TO REFLECT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MOON AND OUR PERSONAL AND CULTURAL CONNECTIONS TO THE MOON. IN OUR CLASS, WE HAVE BEEN LEARNING ABOUT THE MOON PHASES AND HOW THE MOON AFFECTS LIFE ON EARTH. WITHOUT THE MOON , DO YOU THINK THE EARTH OR OUR LIVES WOULD BE THE SAME?

ALTHOUGH I WISH COVID NEVER HAPPENED, ONE BENEFIT IS THE DIVERSITY OF SPECIES FOUND IN THE OPEN SHORES HERE ON ISLAND. SCIENTIST BELEIVE ONE FACTOR IS LESS CHEMICALS FROM SUNSCREEN IN OUR OCEANS! SUNSCREENS THAT ARE NOT REEF FRIENDLY ARE PROVEN TO HURT CORALS BECAUSE IT DECREASES THEIR DEFENSE AGAINST CORAL BLEACHING.

🌊MORAL OF THE STORY: ENJOY LIFE, BUT MAKE WISER CHOICES FOR A BETTER FUTURE 🐠
