Week 1 Assignments Oct. 9-16

This week we are reading a fictional short story by Juan A.A. Sedillo, entitled Gentleman of Rio en Medio. Through this story we begin to analyze how dialogue in a story propels action, reveals character or provokes a decision. In addition there are critical thinking comprehension questions and a story test to complete.

Week 2 Assignments Oct. 19-23

This week we begin working with Mark Twain's autobiographical narrative, Cub Pilot on the Mississippi. Students will take notes as they read and complete critical thinking questions to demonstarte their understanding of the story.

Week 3 Assignments Oct. 26-30

This week we continue working with Mark Twain's Cub Pilot on the Mississippi. Students will show their creativity and understanding of tone by completing a creative writing assignment as well as a story test that includes identifying literary components in the selection.

Week 4 Assignments Nov. 9-13

Week four includes three informational texts that focus on citing textual evidence and determining the main idea of the selctions.

Week 5 Assignments Nov. 16-20

In week five we begin analyzing nonfiction informational text for scope, treatment and organization of ideas. The three selections include a textbook article, a public document and a letter from a congressman all of which concern the Vietnam War.

Weeks 6,7and 8. Nov. 23 - Dec. 4

In weeks 6 thru 8, we will focus on three essays about nature. Analyzing each nonfiction text for Treatment, Scope and Organization.

Week 9 Dec. 7 -11

In week 9, we will read a biographical essay from Always to Remember: The Vision of Maya Ying Lin by Brent Ashabranner.
It is the inpiring biography of a young woman that designed a national monument for the Veterans of the Vietnam War.
