Parts of Speech

It is important to learn about the eight Parts of Speech because they help us communicate properly in our writing and speech. One way to look at the Parts of Speech is that they are categories for each word within a sentence. Knowing the Parts of Speech helps us form complete sentences. Each Part of Speech has its own function and placement within a sentence. Once you know each function of each Part of Speech, you will have a better understanding where to place each word properly when forming sentences. The eight Parts of Speech are: noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, conjunction, preposition, and interjection. Watch the video to review the eight Parts of Speech.

What is Narrative Writing?

Narratives are a popular genre for students and teachers as it provides the writer with an opportunity to share their imagination, creativity, skill and understanding of nearly all elements of writing. On occasion, we refer to a narrative as 'creative writing' or story writing. The purpose of a narrative is simple, to tell the audience a story. It can be written to motivate, educate or most commonly entertain. Narratives can be both fact or fiction. The challenge in writing a good narrative is to captivate the audience and keep them engaged as the story is told.

Narrative Writing

Components of Narrative Writing

Any narrative, whether it is a novel, short story or film, shares the same elements. No matter what the form, the things that a writer needs to construct a story are the same. By learning these elements of narrative, such as plot, setting and characterization, writers can strengthen their own stories by identifying where one of these elements is missing or weak. Understanding the elements of narrative can also help students gain more insight into literary texts.
