Week 1 Assignments Jan. 11-15

This week we will be working with the Stanford Reading Test
which is composed of a vocabulary and comprehension section.

Week 2 Assignments Jan. 19-22

For week two we will be working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's speech, The American Dream. We will analyze the speech with a focus on determining the author's purpose as we interpret the meaning and impact of his words.

Week 3 Assignments Jan 25-29

In week three, we will be working with Maya Angelou's autobiography, I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings. For this reading we will focus on main ideas as we read and analyze a turning point in Angelou's youth.

Week 4 Assignments Feb. 1-5

This week we will work on main ideas and supporting details with selected passages of Maya Angelou's work. We will also make connections with her poem entitled, Life Doesn't Frighten Me At All.

Week 5 Assignments Feb. 8-12

In week five , we begin our introduction to elements of poetry. We will focus on selected sound devices and three types of figurative language as well as a forms of poetry.

Week 6 Assignments Feb. 15-19

This week we will develop our readings skills through the reading of three poems, with a focus on the effect of sound devices.

Week 7 Assignments Feb. 22-26

This week we will continue with Poetry Collection 2 with a focus on sound devices and theme.

Week 8 Assignments March 2-5

This week you will be working on developing our reading skills through analogies. Analogies are used to quickly assess vocabulary, thought process and prior knowledge.


We will use analogies to understand the relationship between words through synonyms, antonyms, cause & effect, sequence, association and characteristics.


Week 9 Assignemnts March 8-12

This week we will be working on increasing our knowledge of figurative language: hyperboles.

  1. Increase understanding and apply your skills on hyperbole.

  2. Review and apply your understanding of metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, assonance, consonance and repetition.
