Understanding Fake News and Deep Fake Videos

Mary Markovinovic

Chief, Public Affairs, Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies

This presentation on media literacy will help participants understand how to spot misinformation (also known as Fake News) as well as the new trend of Deep Fake Videos. So often we "see" what we want to believe so it's more important then ever that people, of all ages, understand what they are seeing and why they are seeing it. The technology to create Deep Fake videos is now affordable and available to the general population. As with any new technology, it can be used for good or bad so its important to understand how it can be identified and how it is being used.

The Story Behind The Properties of Perpetual Light with Author Julian Aguon

Julian Aguon

Guam Department of Education

The voices and stories of the people of Guam, one of the world’s last remaining colonies under American rule, are so rarely heard or taken seriously despite the very real impacts of climate change and constant threat of nuclear warfare that permeates their daily lives. The Properties of Perpetual Light by Julian Aguon is an homage to the work of the activist-writer and is the newest publication of the University of Guam Press. With advance praise from notable authors including Alice Walker and Naomi Klein, Aguon will be sharing the story behind his newest book and his desire to project the voices and stories of the people of Guam.
