Reading Local: How local literature can help enhance a love for reading

in our public schools

Summary: The University of Guam Press was recently revived as our island's leading book publisher. The goal of the Press is to produce local literature and academic texts that can be used to tell the unique stories and histories of our island and region. This presentation will focus on the array of publications available at the Press and how they can be used to instill a sense of pride and curiosity in our students and inspire them to keep reading and writing.

Biography: Victoria-Lola M. Leon Guerrero is the Managing Editor of University of Guam Press. She teaches Women and Gender Studies and has taught Creative Writing and other writing courses at the University of Guam, Mills College, and Southern High School. She has a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Mills College and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from the University of San Francisco. Victoria has published a children's book, short stories, and essays, co-edited an anthology of Chamoru writers, and was the editor of Storyboard: A Journal of Pacific Imagery for three years.

Biography: Alicia Diego is a school librarian at Talofofo Elementary School. She has a Master of Science with a major in library science from the University of North Texas.

Parks in the Classroom with War in the Pacific National Historical Park:

Summary: The presentation will cover War in the Pacific National Historical Park’s mission, how educational programs accomplish our mission, and how the current programs offered to educators enhance their classroom lesson through field trips and other programs in our national park.

Biography: Ms. Lewis is a 2014 Graduate of University of Guam with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and currently enrolled at the University of North Texas Masters in Library and Information Sciences Program. Ms. Lewis' experiences with War in the Pacific National Historical Park began by volunteering with Pacific Historic Parks in their numerous education programs, then was hired as a seasonal Interpretive Ranger in the summer of 2014. In January 2015 she became the Department of Interior Volunteer in Service to America (DOI/VISTA) and served as the Service-Learning Coordinator, creating projects for Guam high school students to earn service learning hours for graduation. She was then hired by Pacific Historic Parks as the Education Coordinator in which she manages educational programs hosted by the Junior Ranger Academy, the Reef Ranger Summer Camp, River Rangers, Art in the Park, educational field trips and various presentations.
