GES Families,
Thank you for celebrating Literacy Week with us! We hope your students enjoyed the glow sticks, pencils, and bookmarks. We saw lots of students dressed for the themes throughout the week and enjoyed seeing all their creativity! While last week was a special week to spotlight reading, we know the importance of keeping a focus on literacy all year long. I want to share a few updates as it relates to our reading practices for the rest of the school year.
A few classes have already learned that our Learning Commons has opened back up! We are excited for this opportunity to open it with a few limitations. Maker spaces are still closed at this time, but students are welcome to check-out books. Mrs. Wahpekeche has created some easy viewing tables with popular books, and students may use the shelves, as well. Students are only able to check out right now with their class so we do not mix cohorts. Remote students may continue to reserve their books the same way they have all year. Students will sanitize their hands on the way in and out of the learning commons and high touch-point areas will be wiped frequently.
Teachers will also be encouraging students to check-out their classroom books, if they haven't already this year. We know our students will be eager to bring books home at night for reading. It is critical for our students to have "just right" books in their hands to read at night. We encourage you to take time to listen to your child read or to read aloud with them. Building good reading practices at a young age, helps to develop a love of reading.
There is also an immense amount of research related to students reading at home. The infographic below from readfortworth.org depicts the differences that reading daily can have on students. Just 20 minutes of reading per day can introduce students to as many as 1,800,000 words per year! This also impacts vocabulary development, comprehension, and fluency. Keep reading GES!
All my best,
Nancy Hale
We are having a Spirit Night at Spring Creek BBQ on Tuesday, March 9th! We are encouraging online pre-orders and curbside pick-up. You can order at springcreekbarbeque.com or on their mobile app. In-store dining is open (5pm-9pm) as well as curbside pickup (5pm-8:30pm). There will not be a class contest this year BUT the first 75 pick-up orders will receive a prize pack! Staff members will be running out curbside meals and prize packs rather than carrying meals inside. Spring Creek will donate 20% of all the evening’s proceeds to the school. All money raised will go towards our campus literacy goals!
We will have another hat day next Tuesday, March 9th to support CHHS Project Graduation. Donations of $1 can be made virtually through Venmo @CHHS-ProjectGraduation or through Paypal using the following LINK. We are not accepting donations in person this year as seniors are not allowed on campus to collect.
This week Open House will look different. What remains the same, is that it will be a celebration of your child's hard work and growth throughout the year. There will not be a synchronous evening time with families. Instead, students will create something that they can share with their families about what they're learning and doing in school. Be on the lookout for information from your child's teacher this week!
In order to telescope in math, a student must take a grade level end of course exam and score 90% or higher. For example, a first grader would take an end of course 2nd grade exam. If that child scored 90% or higher on it, then the next year as a 2nd Grader, that student would take 3rd Grade math. If you are wondering if this could be a good fit for your child, reach out to your child's math teacher to discuss this opportunity.
There is a fee of $30.00 for each “PAPER” (required for grades 1 & 2, optional for grades 3-7) Math Telescoping exam and $40.00 for each “Online Proctorio” exam (grades 3-7 only) ordered from UT-Austin. ALL payments are to be made online at the end of the registration form. A link for the online payment will be provided.
For more information check out the district MATH TELESCOPING WEBSITE & MATH TELESCOPING DATES
