How did European imperialism impact Southeast Asia?

To gain additional understanding of Southeast Asia's (sometimes called Indochina), current geopolitical situation by watching the video on the left. As you watch, you should be able to answer the following questions:

As we learned in the intro slideshow, one of the motivating factors of European imperialism was what Rudyard Kipling called the "White Man's Burden" -- based on the belief that there were superior and inferior races of people. Of course, Europeans believed they were the superior race that had an right and obligation to "civilize" inferior races.
In class, we will be looking at specifically why the French thought they needed to civilize "inferior races" in this account by French statesman Jules Ferry. (Select this link to complete the assignment independently if you are absent from class.)

Why does Hanoi look like Paris? Well, it doesn't look exactly like Paris, but you can see the French influence in Vietnam's capital city, Hanoi by watching this 6 minute video.
