My inspiration:
Originally from my game ideas I was planning to go with my first idea however after feeling like my project was under developed and lack luster I decided to start coming up with another idea, going towards a dungeon crawler medieval game felt a little boring so getting some inspiration from other games as I developed the game idea in my head, taking bits from others as their similarities clicked for me.
This was my original, simple dungeon crawler idea. No story or interesting ideas and a simple get key and chest then move to the next level. But then I started having ideas taking themes from some games that feel similar in my head, also taking inspiration from stories not from games.
For example the development of theme and style I decided for the game game heavily inspired from the themes of "dark souls", a world inhabited by monsters and darkness. A heavily gothic visual theme and in turn becomes dark fantasy. This is where I shifted my idea from real world medieval to more dark fantasy medieval. Which in turn shares themes with manga (story/comic) like "Beserk" which is also dark fantasy and has very visceral subject matter.
This also where I gained inspiration from other games in the design. For example "castle crashers" with its visuals, taking quite gruesome themes and putting a comedic spin on them. Or for example "Dead cells" which had the same dungeon crawler vibes that I wanted to recreate while also having a similar pixel art style to what I envisioned, allowing me to take inspiration from the game in art and design. "katana zero" is another fun hardcore combat level oriented game which has similar core principles to what I want to create, with a hard but fun combat system in small level environments. But also its combat system is very well designed and i take inspiration in how it's done when wanting to add it to my game. Using the mouse or a second joystick to aim and have the movement separate.
I want to implement these ideas from other titles and media into my own project to fulfill my own criteria. Using inspiration from other titles to fill the blanks in areas I don't have any ideas for and try and recreate mechanics, art styles and themes in a fun hardcore dungeon crawler.
