This week:
We will go over the historical fiction genre, a general overview of the Cherokee in North Carolina, and events leading up to and during the Trail of Tears.
We will begin reading the novel towards the end of the week.
This week's text: Soft Rain: A Story of the Cherokee Trail of Tears
Genre: Historical Fiction
Skill and Text Structure: Character, Point of View, Plot
Essential Questions:
-How does reading historical fiction help us make sense of the world?
-How do events affect a person's identity? How do their words and actions define them?
-What can we learn from our successes and mistakes?
-Over time, how has history changed the territories of different groups of people? How did the Trail of Tears impact the Cherokee and other Native Americans?
Nonsense Words
Practice with these words at home. This link is a quick video of me reading the words.
Reading nonsense words are vital to phonics instruction because it forces the reader to use their letter sound knowledge to read the word instead of memorization.
Another list will be sent home this week for December
Reading Log
To ensure that students are reading on a regular basis at home, reading logs will be sent home weekly to be filled out showing what book students read and for how long each day. This will need to be signed by parents.
Reading logs will be sent home on Monday and collected the following Monday.
Students are working on lessons for their path on skills that they need to work on in iReady.
Weekly iReady expectations have been sent home.
I am meeting with small groups while others work on journal writing, independent reading, and reading skills.
We have been getting on chromebooks and joining and signing into various websites we may use throughout the year. All login information will be on a sheet that we will staple to the front of their planner.
Students have joined my Google Classroom, logged into a site, Epic!, that has books to read online, and other reading sites.
We are working in Studies Weekly, Week 4 "Rights and Responsibilities" and Week 5 "Who Are Our State Leaders". We will be learning about our rights and responsibilities as citizens of North Carolina and the leadership qualities and contributions of the men and women who govern our state.
We will also be looking at some of the history that goes along with our novel during Social Studies time.
Students should continue to work on learning their emergency contact information!
