The Infant School Mathematics program has been developed to ensure students receive a thorough conceptual grounding through play-based inquiry. Using a child-centred and responsive approach, the students investigate, question and problem solve as they deepen their understanding through a variety of meaningful real-world experiences. Critical thinking, communication and creativity are key.
Mathematics learning incorporates knowledge, skills and understanding of shape and space, measurement, number sense, data handling and patterning. Using intentionally planned provocations and learning engagements, teachers further students thinking by listening intently and responding to the needs of each unique child.
Mathematics at all levels includes discussions, manipulation of concrete materials, investigations, problem solving, practise and consolidation, and mental mathematics.
The children are constantly encouraged to articulate and expand on their mathematical thinking and choice of strategies where vocabulary, communication, discussion, reasoning, symbols, representations, tools and models are explored.
