Our overarching goal in Literacy is to foster a love of reading and writing, so that passion motivates our children to engage with texts and experiment with writing. Central to this is the concept of empowering our children as learners and, therefore, we encourage choice in book selection and explore a wide range of genres within which to write with purpose.
Children work towards being independent, lifelong readers and writers who use their knowledge, skills and understandings of Literacy in the wider world. In the Infant School, we favour a balanced Literacy approach. This means giving our students opportunities to communicate effectively through reading, writing, viewing, presenting, speaking and listening. We value ongoing purposeful play and meaningful inquiry.
We recognise that Literacy is not isolated to one specific learning area. It is interdisciplinary by nature and occurs all day, every day, both inside and outside the classroom. Literacy is integrated across the curriculum to make for more powerful learning connections and students are encouraged to apply their Literacy understandings throughout the course of their daily lives. Intentional and carefully considered provocations and learning experiences are co-constructed with the children and teachers use children’s passions and natural curiosity to engage and inspire.
We work in partnership with our parents to enhance our children’s Literacy experiences by reading at home and sharing texts with their child. To aid this students and parents have access to the library, online reading resources and a number of parent workshop throughout the year.
