HLP Model A & Model B

The HLP is an important part of our academic language provision to support bi/multilingualism.

It is not possible to schedule provision for all languages within the academic timetable and so the

HLP is designed for students who want to maintain and develop a home or heritage language but

who do not study this language as part of the taught curriculum.

It features weekly, paid-for, personalized lessons in groups of 3-6 students after school or during

lunch times.

The range of languages in the HLP is subject to demand and availability of a suitable teacher and for this reason can vary year to year.

There are two models of HLP

MODEL A - A responsive Approach

Structure and Time

1 hour per week, typically delivered in a single session.
Designed to provide a flexible and supportive introduction to home language learning, with a lighter structure than Model B.

Curriculum

Focuses on developing Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS).
Learning is theme-based and centres on everyday language use, with an emphasis on listening, speaking, and practical vocabulary rather than a prescriptive academic curriculum.

Assessment

Assessment is informal and ongoing, based on teacher observation, participation, and engagement.
Feedback supports students’ confidence and communicative growth in familiar contexts, without formal written assessments

MODEL B- A Prescriptive approach

Structure and Time

Up to 3 hours per week, usually split across two sessions.
Designed to provide a more rigorous and consistent structure than Model A.

Curriculum:

Follows a prescriptive curriculum aligned with age-appropriate standards.
Includes planned units of work, skills progression, and specific learning objectives.

Assessment:

Students complete regular assessments to track progress.
These include written tasks, oral presentations, and comprehension exercises.
Assessment helps align the programme with students’ academic growth and prepares them for High School/IB pathways.
