HLP EVENTS 2023
The Home Languages team and our Danish HLP teacher, Ms Sara Nielsen, organised a "hygge' themed Christmas celebration for all the Danish speaking families in UWCSEA Dover on 13 December 2023.
Inspired by the Danish tradition of "hygge," the Christmas party was filled with a cozy and heartwarming atmosphere for all attendees. This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and connect with our Danish roots, sharing the joy of the season with fellow families who appreciate the warmth and simplicity of this beautiful tradition.
We began this new school year with an invitation to the "German Language Information Evening" jointly hosted by the German Language Department and the Home Languages Programme on 31 August 2023.
The information evening featured the following topics :

Presenting the German Curriculum
Introducing a new model (Model B) in the HLP Programme which will offer a more intense and structured approach for those students who aspire to develop a solid academic language proficiency in German
Our teacher of Swedish Home Language, Anna Rydberg, shared ideas on how to support children, maintain and develop the Swedish language and culture during the years families live overseas. In addition, she presented a new Swedish HLP model at Dover, with a more intense and structured approach for those students who aspire to develop academic language proficiency in Swedish.
Swedish Speaking Parents learnt about the Language Pathways available in our school for our Swedish speaking students. The Head of Multilingualism, Ms Pilar Jimenez, offered her insights into the challenges Bi/Multilingual learners face in an English Medium of Instruction school such as UWCSEA and will share strategies for these students to keep their home language growing.
On 18 May 2023, Spanish Speaking families were invited to 'Spanish Speaking Families Information Evening' about how UWCSEA supports their child's Spanish language skills and cultural identity. Parents also learnt about the Spanish Language courses available for the Spanish speaking students and the language pathways available in our school.
