When a student asks to take an iPad home, do not determine the instructional exception yourself. Direct the student to the approving teacher and follow your school’s checkout process once approval has been documented.
The guiding principle is simple: Middle school iPads stay at school. Home use is rare, purposeful, and educationally necessary.
The following are the details being provided to administrators and teachers at middle school:

Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, middle school iPads remain at school unless an approved exception has been granted.
Students will continue to have an individually assigned iPad for use during the school day, but district iPads are no longer considered take-home devices.

Teachers should plan assignments assuming students will not have their district iPad at home.
Unfinished classwork or needing additional time does not qualify as an exception.

Home use should be rare and tied to an educational need that cannot reasonably be met during the school day.
Approved reasons include:
A documented IEP, 504, English Learner plan, or other educational accommodation
An extended medical absence
An approved Bend-La Pine Online Math or World Language course
A rare, teacher-approved instructional circumstance with no reasonable non-digital alternative

An iPad should not be checked out simply because a student:
Did not finish classwork or homework
Needs more time
Wants to study
Forgot school supplies
Prefers working digitally
Has a parent requesting the device without a qualifying educational need
Routine digital homework or a teacher preference for students to work digitally is also not an approved reason.

The teacher determines whether the request meets district criteria.
Before approving home use, the key question is:
Is taking the iPad home essential to meeting the learning objective, or could the same objective reasonably be accomplished another way?
If the learning objective can be met without the device leaving school, the iPad stays on campus.

The teacher should:
Verify that the request meets an approved criterion.
Record the checkout.
Complete the student checkout pass.
Establish an end date.
The student should carry the pass while transporting the iPad and return the device to school when the approved period ends.
