We will be grading on the following scale this year. You can see what each level means in the chart below.
VARSITY SWIMMER
I can apply and transfer my skill expertly between ideas and tasks on my own, showing evidence of multiple connections and original thinking.
Self-reflection: What steps did I take to be successful? Will this process work again to recreate my success?
Feedback: What can others tell me or show me that will help me challenge my thinking?
INDEPENDENT SWIMMER
I can apply my skill independently. Most aspects of the task are correctly identified and explained. I can also show evidence of skill transfer through my connections.
Self-reflection: Is my idea original? Does it show depth of thought through multiple connections? Where can my analysis be improved?
Feedback: What can others tell me or show me that will help me make more connections at a deeper level?
NEEDS A COACH
I can show knowledge and application of my skill; however, some elements of my work may be incorrectly identified and/or explained. My connections are simple and/or demonstrate misconceptions.
Self-reflection: What aspects of the mastery checklist for the target am I missing?
Feedback: What can others tell me or show me that will help me understand my mistakes?
NEEDS A LIFEGUARD
Although I provided some evidence, much of my work is incorrect or too similar to another example to be assessed at a higher level yet. I need to Reassess.
Self-reflection: What was the task asking of me?
Feedback: What can others tell me or show me that will help me better understand the task?
NEEDS TO JUMP IN!
I have not shown enough evidence of my skill for the target. I have not yet attempted enough of the task for my skill to be assessed. My work is Incomplete.
Self-reflection: What are the true causes for my missing work?
Teacher Conference: What priorities and strategies can my teacher suggest to help me learn?
The levels of mastery for this class are based on Bloom's Taxonomy. The image below shows how each level increases the level of thinking a student is doing. In this class, we push students to think deeper. This takes time, so students are encouraged to take feedback, reflect on their performance, fix their mistakes, and improve their work/learning/thinking throughout the year.
